On October 24 2005, the United Nations Association of China and the United Nations System in China held the Workshop on China and UN in commemoration of the 60th anniversary of the United Nations. State Councilor Tang Jiaxuan attended and addressed the opening ceremony of the workshop.
Tang said that the United Nations went through an extraordinary history over the past 60 years and played an irreplaceable role in safeguarding world peace and promoting common development. In September this year, the UN Summit, the largest ever in history, was successfully held in New York. The Outcome Document was adopted in the summit, during which the leaders of all countries reaffirmed their positive comments on the United Nations and their commitments to the UN Charter and made important decisions on a series of major issues concerning development, security, human rights, rule of law, the UN reform. The Outcome Document is a guiding document for the future work of the UN and pointed out the right direction for the development of the UN.
Tang also pointed out that President Hu Jintao attended the UN Summit, during which he earnestly advocated the establishment of a world with lasting peace and common prosperity and voiced major opinions and views of China on strengthening international collective security mechanism, promoting global development cooperation, reforming and consolidating the UN. President Hu reaffirmed that China will unswervingly abide by the purposes and principles of the UN Charter, actively participate in international affairs, and fulfill international obligations. This opened a new chapter for the cooperation between China and the United Nations.
State Councilor Tang Jiaxuan put forward a 3-point proposal on strengthening the cooperation between China and the United Nations: urging the UN to adhere to multilateralism and achieve common security; pushing the UN to adhere to mutually beneficial cooperation and achieve common prosperity; and drive the UN to keep up with the times and advance reform.
UN Secretary General Kofi Annan sent out his letter of congratulations to the workshop. Annan spoke highly of the cooperative relations between China and the United Nations and appreciated the consistency of China's objective of building a well-off society with the Millennium Development Goals. He said that the UN would like to further strengthen the cooperation with China and contribute to the realization of China's goal of building a well-off society.
Assistant Foreign Minister Shen Guofang presided at the opening ceremony of the workshop, where representatives from relevant domestic government bodies, UN agencies in China, academic institutions, and the industry held discussions and exchanged views on the cooperation between China and the UN in such areas as security, development, human rights and society.
