On June 24, 2009, Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi met with Miguel d'Escoto Brockmann, the president of the 63rd session of the UN General Assembly, at the headquarters of the United Nations in New York, the United States, on the sidelines of the UN Conference on the World Financial and Economic Crisis and its Impact on Development.
Yang said with the growing spread of the global financial crisis, the world economy has fallen into recession. As the biggest victims of the crisis, the developing countries are facing with both internal economic difficulties and deteriorating external environment for development, Yang said. The international community is also facing with an unprecedented crisis for development.
"The United Nations, as the most universal, representative and authoritative international intergovernmental organization, should make its own voice on fighting the crisis, especially let the international community hear and attach great importance to the concerns and requests of developing countries," Yang said. He said China hopes the high-level meeting can accumulate consensus and release positive signals of the international cooperation on fighting the crisis. Besides, the meeting should focus on the impacts the crisis has cast on development, call for further expansion of investment into development and safeguard the development resources so to ensure the realization of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). Moreover, the meeting could help step up the reform of international financial institutions, said Yang.
Brockmann expressed his appreciation for Chinese government's support for the conference, saying it is of great significance to the success of the conference. He said with the concerted efforts of UN member countries including China, all sides have reached consensus on the final outcome document of the conference and will implement a series of following-up actions. He said the United Nations will continue to exert influence on addressing the international financial crisis in a bid to promote the realization of the MDGs and the global development.
