On October 24, 2011, Assistant Foreign Minister Wu Hailong was invited to the reception celebrating the United Nations Day.

Wu said that the UN, as the most universal, representative and authoritative inter-governmental international organization in the world today, has held an important position and played a key role in international affairs and people's production and life since its establishment. As the international situation changes and develops and the global threats and challenges are increasing, the UN should keep progressing and develop further. Under new circumstances, the organization should strengthen its capacity of handling global threats and challenges, play its unique role in international affairs and grow more robust.

He stressed that this year marks the 40th anniversary of the restoring of legal seat of the People's Republic of China in the UN. China's relations with the rest of the world have changed significantly over the past 40 years. Based on its own efforts and through the exchanges and cooperation with the world, China has achieved economic development and takeoff. At the same time, China's development also enriches the practices of the UN and promoted its progress. China will continue to take the UN as a partner, promote its core role in international affairs and move forward the cooperation with the organization.

About 400 participants, including the UN Under-Secretary-General and Director-General of the UN Office at Geneva Tokayev and the UN Resident Coordinator in China Lok-Dessallien were present at the event. Tokayev and Lok-Dessallien addressed the reception respectively. They pointed out that the UN has been committed to maintaining peace, promoting development and enhancing human rights over 66 years and achieved outstanding results. Global challenges are rising, which highlights the importance of multilateralism. The UN has a lot to do in this area. Since restoring its legal seat in the UN, China has played an important role of safeguarding world peace and promoting global development. China is an important partner of the UN, and the organization expects to strengthen cooperation with China.
