On May 13, 2017, Foreign Minister Wang Yi met in Beijing with President of the 71st Session of the UN General Assembly Peter Thomson, who was in China for the Belt and Road Forum for International Cooperation.
Wang Yi expressed that the joint construction of the “Belt and Road” initiative conforms to the vision that all countries hope to, given the current situation, realize advantage complementarities, and common development. The initiative is the largest public product that China offers to the world. Attaching great importance to the UN’s position and role, China will continue to actively support the UN General Assembly’s work. China expects to enhance cooperation in the joint construction of the “Belt and Road” with the UN General Assembly, and make greater contributions to world peace and development.
Peter Thomson noted that China’s joint construction of the “Belt and Road” initiative shares the same goal and runs in parallel with the UN 2030 Agenda for the Sustainable Development, which showcases China’s determination and capability to be committed to mutually beneficial and win-win cooperation. Countries all over the world warmly welcome such initiative. Peter Thomson extended gratitude to China’s supporting in the UN General Assembly’s work, and expressed the willingness to reinforce cooperation with China and play an active role in advancing the “Belt and Road” construction.
