On September 18, 2017 local time, Foreign Minister Wang Yi met with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres during his attendance at the 72nd Session of the UN General Assembly in New York.
Wang Yi expressed that China hopes the UN can play a more important role under the background that the world is facing numerous uncertainties and destabilizing factors. China appreciates the UN and Secretary-General himself for highly agreeing with a series of important initiatives and proposals put forward by President Xi Jinping such as the building of a community of shared future for mankind, the building of an open global economy, and realizing the rebalancing of economic globalization. China is willing to further cooperate with the UN on the basis of the above-mentioned consensus, safeguard the purposes and principles of the UN Charter, maintain multilateralism process, increase investment in development, and enhance peacekeeping capacity so as to deal with various global challenges in an effective manner.
With regard to the current situation in Rakhine State of Myanmar, Wang Yi said that China is opposed to the recent violent attacks in the region and understands and supports Myanmar's efforts to maintain national stability. China expects to see the end of war at an early date and an end to people's sufferings as soon as possible. China is sympathetic with the people who have fled to Bangladesh and will provide emergency humanitarian assistance for Bangladesh. China proposes that Myanmar and Bangladesh should solve impending issues through dialogue and consultation. China is willing to continuously facilitate peace talks in its own way, and hopes the international community can play a constructive role in easing tension and promoting dialogue.
Antonio Guterres said that the UN attaches high importance to China's international status and influence, and appreciates China's international leading role in carrying out peacekeeping operation, handling hotspot issues, tackling climate change and implementing the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. The UN is willing to closely cooperate with China and make joint efforts in dealing with the current various global challenges facing the world. The UN pays attention to China's perspective and proposition on the situation in Rakhine State of Myanmar and hopes that China will play an important role in easing the current tension by using its influence.
Both sides also exchanged views on the situation on the Korean Peninsula.
