On February 18, 2025 local time, Member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and Minister of Foreign Affairs Wang Yi answered questions from the media on the spot after chairing the United Nations (U.N.) Security Council high-level meeting themed "Practicing Multilateralism, Reforming and Improving Global Governance".
When asked about China's views on the postponement of the second phase of negotiations on the Gaza issue, Wang Yi stated that although the current focus of all parties is on the Ukraine issue, it is important to recognize that the world is facing more than just the Ukraine crisis. Other hotspots, including the Gaza conflict, also require the international community's attention and should not be marginalized.
Behind the Gaza conflict lies the unresolved Palestinian question. More than 70 years have passed since the U.N. adopted the resolution to establish two States, Palestine and Israel, but the two-state solution has only been partially implemented. The State of Israel was established long ago, but the Palestinian people still do not have their own country. Many are displaced, becoming refugees. The Palestinian question remains at the core of the Middle East issue. Without the implementation of the two-state solution, the logic of repaying grievance with grievance will not cease, and the cycle of violence for violence will not end. Peace and stability in the Middle East will not be guaranteed, and the peace and security of all countries will be threatened.
Therefore, in this U.N. building, China calls on all parties to accelerate the advancement of the two-state solution and support the establishment of an independent State of Palestine based on the 1967 borders. Palestinian factions should truly implement the Beijing Declaration and achieve unity and self-strength. All parties in the Middle East should transcend their differences and support Palestine's statehood. The United Nations should take action to admit Palestine as a full member. Gaza is the Palestinian homeland and a part of Palestinian territory, and should not be a victim of international politics. The parties concerned should continue to implement the ceasefire agreement and adopt a constructive attitude to advance follow-up negotiations. The post-conflict governance of Gaza should adhere to the principle of "Palestinians governing Palestine" and align with the two-state solution to ultimately achieve peaceful coexistence between Palestine and Israel, as well as long-term peace and stability in the Middle East.
