On April 11, 2025, Member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and Foreign Minister Wang Yi met with Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Rafael Mariano Grossi in Beijing.
Wang Yi said that this year marks the 80th anniversary of the victory of the Chinese People's War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War as well as the 80th anniversary of the founding of the United Nations. In the face of rising unilateralism, power politics and bullying, the international community must present a unified voice to make truth uncovered and foil these injustices. Otherwise, the world will fall back into the law of the jungle, and the majority of small and medium-sized countries will be the first to bear the brunt of the impact. The founding mission of the United Nations was to maintain a just international order, and safeguard the sovereignty and equality of all nations. Today, humanity has once again found itself at a crossroad. Should unilateralism be allowed to spread wantonly, or should multilateralism be firmly advocated? Should power politics be allowed to go unchecked, or should greater democracy be promoted in international relations? Should international law and the fundamental principles of international relations be upheld, or should the principle of "whoever waves bigger fists has the final say" prevail? All countries must make their stance clear, and the United Nations, in particular, should take the lead and play its due role.
Wang Yi stressed that the IAEA, as an important member of the United Nations system, shoulders the important mission of upholding basic norms governing international relations, promoting the peaceful use of nuclear energy, and preventing nuclear proliferation. China has consistently attached great importance to its cooperation with the United Nations and IAEA. Last year marked the 40th anniversary of China's accession to the IAEA. Over the past four decades, the cooperation between both sides has not only strongly supported the development of China's nuclear energy sector but also played a significant role in improving global governance in the nuclear field and enhancing the well-being of the entire humanity. Wang Yi expressed the hope that the IAEA will continue to uphold its objectivity, neutrality and professionalism in properly handling the Iranian nuclear issue, AUKUS nuclear submarine cooperation, Japan's discharge of Fukushima nuclear-contaminated water into the sea, and other issues.
Rafael Mariano Grossi said China is a major country in the world that plays a leading role in and makes positive contributions to multilateral organizations including the IAEA. Amid the changing and turbulent international landscape, China firmly supports the status and role of the United Nations and its agencies, serving as a staunch force for stability in a volatile world. The IAEA values its cooperation with China and appreciates the three global initiatives put forth by President Xi Jinping, as well as China's achievements in the peaceful use of nuclear energy. The IAEA is willing to deepen cooperation with China in an all-round manner and properly handle the Iranian nuclear issue and other relevant hotspot issues.
