On April 21, 2025, Vice Foreign Minister Ma Zhaoxu met with Executive Secretary of the Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) Armida Salsiah Alisjahbana on the sidelines of the 81st session of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific in Bangkok, Thailand.

Ma Zhaoxu said that the U.S. abuse of tariffs around the world has severely impacted the global economic order and seriously undermined economic cooperation in the Asia-Pacific region. As the most important regional cooperation mechanism of the United Nations in the Asia-Pacific region, the ESCAP shoulders the important responsibility of maintaining open development in the region. China is firmly committed to upholding multilateralism and is ready to strengthen the synergy of high-quality Belt and Road cooperation and the Global Development Initiative with the ESCAP, consolidate and expand the open cooperation pattern in the Asia-Pacific region, and promote the building of an Asia-Pacific community with a shared future.

Armida Salsiah Alisjahbana expressed gratitude for China's long-term strong support for the ESCAP, positively evaluated the important role of the high-quality Belt and Road cooperation and the Global Development Initiative in promoting the development of the Asia-Pacific region, and expressed willingness to strengthen exchanges and cooperation with China to jointly promote the openness, inclusiveness, and sustainable development of the Asia-Pacific region.
