As the rotating president of the U.N. Security Council for May, China proposed holding a high-level Security Council meeting on the theme of “Upholding the Purposes and Principles of the U.N. Charter and Strengthening the U.N.-centered International System”, hoping to work with all countries to revisit the original aspirations of the U.N. Charter, restore the authority of the United Nations, and build the broadest possible consensus on this. Judging from the statements of all parties, everyone agrees that the U.N. Charter should be upheld, the status of the United Nations should be maintained, and U.N. reform should be supported.

Wang Yi said that this year marks the 55th anniversary of the restoration of the lawful seat of the People’s Republic of China in the United Nations. China highly appreciates the Secretariat’s firm commitment to the one-China principle and its adherence to the United Nations General Assembly Resolution 2758. As a firm supporter of the cause of the United Nations, China is willing to continue to hold high the banner of multilateralism, firmly uphold the international system with the United Nations at its core, and continuously deepen cooperation with the United Nations in such fields as advancing South-South cooperation, reforming the international economic and financial system, addressing climate change, artificial intelligence and regional hotspots, so as to support, reinvigorate and strengthen the United Nations with concrete actions, continuously empower global governance with China’s governance and inject stronger momentum into building a community with a shared future for humanity.

Wang Yi said that since taking office, Secretary-General António Guterres has adhered to the principle of multilateralism, worked hard for peace and spoken up for justice, earning recognition from the international community. China appreciates this and has invited António Guterres to visit China within this year.

António Guterres asked Wang Yi to convey his warm greetings to Chinese leaders. He praised China’s initiative in convening the Security Council high-level meeting, saying it fully demonstrates China’s firm support for multilateralism and the United Nations. He thanked China for its consistent defense of the U.N. Charter and international law. He said that development and peace are two sides of the same coin, and they reinforce each other. China is the most reliable partner for sustainable development and a strong participant in U.N. peacekeeping operations. The United Nations appreciates the series of global initiatives proposed by China in the fields of security, peace and development, and looks forward to working together with China to eliminate conflicts, so that peace prevails, international law prevails and multilateralism prevails. The United Nations firmly adheres to the General Assembly Resolution 2758, which embodies the one-China principle, and there is no room for ambiguity on this. The United Nations stands ready to continue deepening cooperation with China in the fields including reforming the international economic and financial system, sustainable development, climate change and artificial intelligence, so as to promote the balanced development of the three pillars of the United Nations: peace, development, and human rights.
