In 1987, the 42th Session of the United Nations General Assembly adopted the Resolution 42/37, authorizing the establishment of the Secretary-General’s Mechanism for Investigation of Alleged Use of Chemical and Biological Weapons (UNSGM),which was further affirmed by the adoption of United Nations Security Council Resolution 620 in 1988. In the event of suspected use of chemical and biological weapons, the United Nations Secretary-General may select experts and laboratories from the UNSGM roster to carry out investigations.

China actively participates in the UNSGM activities,by nominating Chinese experts and laboratories to the UNSGM roster, and participating in relevant training, seminars and testing activities. China also hosted two External Quality Assurance Exercise (EQAE) for rostered laboratories, respectively in 2022 and 2024. Meanwhile, China also support to have discussions on improving the guidelines of the mechanism in light of the changing situation.
