On September 1, 2025, upon the conclusion of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Tianjin Summit, Member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and Foreign Minister Wang Yi, together with SCO Secretary-General Nurlan Yermekbayev, met Chinese and foreign press at the Media Center of the Summit and answered questions.

Wang Yi said that the SCO is the first international organization named after a Chinese city, co-founded by China, and headquartered in China. Over the past 24 years since its founding, the SCO has upheld the Shanghai Spirit of mutual trust, mutual benefit, equality, consultation, respect for diversity of civilizations, and pursuit of common development, maintaining a robust momentum of growth. Today, the SCO has grown into a family of 27 countries, covering regions across Asia, Europe, and Africa, with a population approaching half of the world's total and an economic aggregate accounting for one-quarter of the global total, making it a regional cooperation organization with the largest population, the widest geographical coverage, and the greatest development potential in today's world. The Tianjin Summit is the fifth SCO summit hosted by China.

Wang Yi said that this is the largest-ever summit. President Xi Jinping chaired the Meeting of the Council of Heads of State and the "SCO Plus" Meeting, engaging with 23 foreign leaders or their representatives and 10 heads of international organizations to renew friendship, explore cooperation, and seek common development.

This is a summit on planning high-quality development. President Xi Jinping delivered a keynote speech, putting forward five key propositions, i.e., "seek common ground while putting aside differences, pursue mutual benefit and win-win results, champion openness and inclusiveness, uphold fairness and justice, and strive for real results and high efficiency". These five aspects are consistent with the Shanghai Spirit and enrich it with new dimensions, receiving high praise and positive response from the participating leaders.

This is a summit that charts the way forward for humanity. At the "SCO Plus" Meeting, President Xi Jinping put forth the Global Governance Initiative, which became the biggest highlight of this summit. In response to the deficit in governance facing today's world, President Xi Jinping called for adhering to sovereign equality, abiding by international rule of law, practicing multilateralism, advocating the people-centered approach, and focusing on taking real actions. China will work with all countries for a more just and equitable global governance system and advance toward a community with a shared future for humanity. The initiative was welcomed and supported by the leaders of participating countries and received broad responses and recognition from the international community.

This is the most fruitful summit. Members of the SCO family had in-depth exchanges of views on promoting the Shanghai Spirit and advancing the development of the SCO, put forward a series of proposals and propositions, and reached extensive common understandings.

Wang Yi said that since taking over the rotating chair of the SCO in July last year, China has adhered to action-oriented and pragmatic approaches, organizing more than 200 events, issuing 92 outcome documents, and proposing 36 important cooperation initiatives. China has fulfilled its promise to host a friendly, united, pragmatic, and fruitful summit, leaving a distinct "Chinese imprint" and advancing the SCO into a new stage of high-quality development featuring stronger solidarity, coordination, dynamism and productiveness, which will surely become an important milestone in the history of the SCO's development.
