On May 27, 2026 local time, Member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and Foreign Minister Wang Yi met with Costa Rican Foreign Minister Manuel Tovar Rivera in New York.

Wang Yi conveyed President Xi Jinping’s greetings to President Laura Fernández. He noted that President Xi Jinping sent a special envoy to attend Costa Rica’s presidential handover ceremony, and President Laura Fernández expressed her commitment to deepening Costa Rica-China friendship and strengthening bilateral relations, which China appreciates. Costa Rica is the first Central American country to establish diplomatic relations with China in the new century, as well as the first to forge a strategic partnership and sign a free trade agreement with China, taking the lead among Central American countries in developing relations with China. China’s policy toward Costa Rica remains consistent and stable. June 1 will mark the 19th anniversary of the establishment of China-Costa Rica diplomatic relations. Over the past 19 years, bilateral relations have achieved substantial growth, and practical cooperation between the two countries has yielded fruitful results. The venue for Costa Rica’s presidential handover ceremony—the National Stadium, built with China’s assistance—has become a symbol of bilateral cooperation and friendship. Facts have fully proven that China-Costa Rica relations serve the long-term strategic interests of both countries and deliver benefits to both peoples.

Wang Yi stressed that the Taiwan question lies at the core of China’s core interests. The United Nations refers to Taiwan exclusively as Taiwan, Province of China. It is believed that the new Costa Rican government will continue to abide by the one-China principle. China has always been a reliable friend and partner of Costa Rica. We will enhance cooperation with Costa Rica under the framework of South-South cooperation to support the country’s accelerated modernization drive.

Manuel Tovar Rivera conveyed President Laura Fernández’s greetings to President Xi Jinping, thanked President Xi Jinping for sending a special envoy to attend the presidential handover ceremony, and congratulated China on the successful holding of the UN Security Council High-Level Meeting proposed by China. He stated that Costa Rica reaffirms its firm commitment to the one-China policy and appreciates China’s support and assistance for Costa Rica’s economic and social development. Next year will mark the 20th anniversary of the establishment of Costa Rica-China diplomatic relations. Taking this opportunity, Costa Rica stands ready to enhance political mutual trust with China, strengthen practical cooperation, and elevate bilateral relations to a new height. As a small country, Costa Rica fully recognizes the importance of the United Nations and is ready to work with China to uphold multilateralism and safeguard world peace and development.
