On December 4, 2024, Member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and Foreign Minister Wang Yi held talks with Foreign Affairs Minister of Chile Alberto van Klaveren Stork in Beijing.
Wang Yi said, China and Chile, though far apart, have always understood, opened up to and supported each other. The two peoples have shared friendship and amity, and bilateral relations have maintained a momentum of steady development. Chile was the first South American country to establish diplomatic relations with the People's Republic of China and the first Latin American country to sign a free trade agreement with China, playing an exemplary and leading role in developing relations with China. Over the past three years, President Xi Jinping and President Gabriel Boric met three times to map out a blueprint for the development of the comprehensive strategic partnership between the two countries, guiding bilateral cooperation in various fields to achieve gratifying results and ushering China-Chile relations into the best period. During the recent meeting in Lima, President Gabriel Boric brought with him the latest volume of Xi Jinping: The Governance of China and asked for President Xi's signature, reflecting his active willingness to strengthen the exchange of governance experience, which has become a vivid story of China-Chile friendship. Next year will mark the 55th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Chile and the 20th anniversary of the signing of the free trade agreement. China is ready to work with Chile to follow through on the common understandings reached between the two heads of state and bring the comprehensive strategic partnership between the two countries to new heights through high-level political mutual trust, practical cooperation and connectivity.
Wang Yi pointed out, both China and Chile have maintained stability and continuity in their domestic and foreign policies, respected their respective core interests, and viewed each other's development and changes with a rational and positive attitude. This is the successful experience and useful practice for keeping sound and steady growth of bilateral relations and deserves to be carried forward continuously. China is ready to maintain high-level exchanges with Chile, intensify exchanges at all levels, leverage the leading role of the free trade agreement, continuously upgrade bilateral economic and trade cooperation, expand cooperation in emerging areas such as information, communications and clean energy, and boost each other's modernization process. The two sides should further enhance the synergy of development strategies and make Chile a model of high-quality Belt and Road cooperation between China and LAC (Latin America and the Caribbean).
Wang Yi said, China and Chile, both important countries in the Asia-Pacific region, should strengthen high-level international cooperation, jointly safeguard multilateralism and free trade, and work together to build an open, dynamic, resilient and peaceful Asia-Pacific community with a shared future. The China-CELAC (Community of Latin American and Caribbean States) Forum has become a major platform for promoting overall China-LAC cooperation and building a China-LAC community with a shared future, and has also played a positive role in the integration process of Latin America. China is ready to continue its solidarity and cooperation with Chile and other Latin American and Caribbean states to implement the three major global initiatives and make in-depth and solid progress in the building of a China-LAC community with a shared future.
Alberto van Klaveren Stork said he fully agreed with the Chinese side's assessment of bilateral relations. Chile has always maintained a high level of development in its relations with China and achieved fruitful results in political, economic and cultural cooperation, among other fields. President Gabriel Boric paid a successful state visit to China last year and met with President Xi Jinping again in Lima, deepening friendship and intensifying cooperation. Chile firmly abides by the one-China principle, which is an important cornerstone of Chile's foreign policy and will never change. Chile's presidents visited China three consecutive times for the Belt and Road Forum for International Cooperation, which shows that deepening Belt and Road cooperation is a cross-partisan consensus in Chile. Chile admires China's tremendous development achievements and is ready to work with China to take the 55th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations next year as an opportunity to increase high-level exchanges, strengthen people-to-people and cultural interactions, deepen cooperation in various fields, raise the level of connectivity and push for greater development in bilateral relations. Chile adheres to the principle of technological neutrality and welcomes Chinese enterprises to invest and do business in Chile. Chile is a country founded on openness and is ready to work with China to jointly safeguard free trade and open economy, and oppose protectionism and unilateralism. Chile supports China's accession to the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership and the Digital Economy Partnership. Chile is willing to continue actively supporting and promoting the development of the CELAC-China Forum and LAC-China relations.
