Wang Yi on Important Inspirations from 50 Years of China-EU Diplomatic Relations
Updated: July 04, 2025 15:06

On July 3, 2025 local time, Member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and Foreign Minister Wang Yi met the press together with German Foreign Minister Johann David Wadephul in Berlin and answered questions on the spot.

Wang Yi said that this year marks the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and the European Union (EU), which is of great significance in building on past achievements and charting the future. China-EU cooperation has grown from scratch and expanded steadily. Today, the daily trade volume between the two sides is equivalent to the total annual trade volume of previous years. China-EU relations have also kept reaching new heights, forming a comprehensive strategic partnership. Both sides should take the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations as an opportunity to thoroughly review and reaffirm important inspirations drawn from history. In other words, the China-EU relationship should be characterized as a partnership, with cooperation being the defining feature, independence the key value, win-win outcomes the prospect for development. Both sides should take this year's high-level exchanges as an opportunity to cherish the efforts made by predecessors, carry forward the hard-won spirit of cooperation, and work together to open up the next 50 years of China-EU relations that will be more resilient and autonomous, more mature and stable, and more forward-looking.

Wang Yi said that some people are now attempting to talk down China-EU relations, exaggerate specific issues, turn economic and trade matters into security issues, or cling to biases against China and confine themselves in a cocoon of false information. However, denying past achievements only obscures the vision for the future; showing no respect for the efforts of the predecessors amounts to negating their present. The trend of the times toward progress is unstoppable. China-EU relations will only continue to move forward, not stagnate, and certainly not regress. China's policy towards Europe is stability and consistent. China supports European integration, supports Europe's strategic autonomy, and supports Europe in becoming an important pole in a multipolar world. Whether Europe is in a time of prosperity or adversity, China's policy has never changed. No matter how the international and European situations evolve, China's position remains consistent.

Wang Yi emphasized that amid the current international situation fraught with chaos, China remains the most important force for stability and the most predictable factor of certainty in the world. On peace and security issues, China has the best record among major countries. China has never plotted wars, never participated in conflicts, and never engaged in geopolitical rivalry. In terms of global economic recovery, China contributes about 30 percent to world economic growth each year. China has also been accelerating high-standard opening up and fostering a more market-oriented, law-based and internationalized business environment. On international and regional disputes, China adheres to political settlement through dialogue and consultation, opposes the use of force and unilateral sanctions, upholds the principle of non-interference in internal affairs, and safeguards the legitimate rights and interests of developing countries, especially small and medium-sized countries.

Wang Yi stressed that China's development represents a growing force for peace in today's world. China, with open arms, is always ready to welcome countries around the world, including European countries that wish to cooperate with China, to share opportunities, jointly protect Planet Earth, humanity's one and only home, and build a community with a shared future for mankind.
