Wang Yi Meets with SCO Secretary-General Nurlan Yermekbayev

On July 16, 2025, Member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and Foreign Minister Wang Yi met with Secretary-General of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Nurlan Yermekbayev in Tianjin.

Wang Yi commended the Secretary-General for fulfilling his duties with dedication since taking office, actively contributing to the implementation of common understandings reached between leaders of member states, and establishing sound working relations with relevant departments of the Chinese side. As a comprehensive regional organization with the world's largest population, broadest geographical coverage and immense potential, the SCO is drawing increasing attention from the international community. The organization can play a more prominent role in safeguarding regional peace and stability and promoting development and revitalization, and can make new practices and SCO contributions to the building of a new type of international relations and a community with a shared future for mankind. The Secretariat, as the SCO's most important permanent body, has received full recognition from the Council of the Ministers of Foreign Affairs for its work. Wang Yi expressed confidence that under the leadership of the Secretary-General, the Secretariat will play a greater role in ensuring the SCO's efficient functioning, coordinating actions among all parties, amplifying the SCO's voice, and enhancing the SCO's influence. China will continue to support and facilitate the work of the Secretariat.

Wang Yi said that since assuming the rotating presidency of the SCO, China has hosted over 90 events and advanced a series of cooperation, all aimed at pooling the strength of member states and further solidifying and strengthening the SCO. He expressed hope that the Secretary-General will continue to support China's presidency and work with the Chinese side to host a summit featuring friendship, unity, and fruitful outcomes.

Nurlan Yermekbayev extended congratulations on the successful hosting of the Meeting of the Council of the Ministers of Foreign Affairs of the SCO Member States. He expressed deep admiration and full agreement with the insightful vision on the development of the organization presented by President Xi Jinping during his meeting with representatives of the SCO member states. Since assuming the rotating presidency, China has proposed a rich and substantive program of activities and delivered on them one by one, elevating cooperation among member states to a new level. The Secretariat will continue to fully support China's presidency, and jointly prepare for the Tianjin summit to ensure fruitful outcomes.
