On July 28, 2025, Member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and Foreign Minister Wang Yi had a phone call with newly-appointed Foreign Minister of the Republic of Korea (ROK) Cho Hyun at the latter's request.

Wang Yi said that China and the ROK are important neighbors and cooperative partners, and that upholding good-neighborliness and friendship serves the common interests of the two peoples. After the new ROK government took office, the two heads of state had a phone call, marking a good start for China-ROK relations and pointing the direction for future work.

Wang Yi stressed that China and the ROK should truly act as strategic cooperative partners and advance bilateral relations to a higher level. First, the two sides should maintain policy stability. China always attaches importance to developing China-ROK cooperation and ensures continuity and stability in its policy toward the ROK. Wang Yi expressed the hope that the ROK's policy toward China will likewise remain stable, sustainable and predictable, avoiding inconsistency. Second, the two sides should uphold independence and autonomy. China-ROK relations are based on mutual interests, benefit both peoples, and are neither targeted at nor constrained by any third party. Third, the two sides should enhance mutual benefits. Given the close economic ties and highly intertwined industrial and supply chains between China and the ROK, the two sides should deepen mutually beneficial cooperation to achieve common development. As beneficiaries of multilateralism and free trade, China and the ROK should jointly oppose "decoupling and supply-chain disruption", and maintain the stability and smooth functioning of global industrial and supply chains. China supports the ROK in hosting the APEC Economic Leaders' Meeting in the second half of this year.

Cho Hyun said that the ROK attaches great importance to its relations with China and looks forward to closer high-level exchanges between the two countries to further develop the ROK-China strategic cooperative partnership in the future. ROK and China maintain close economic and trade relations and have formed a sound pattern of cooperation. The ROK is willing to actively advance bilateral free trade negotiations and deepen ROK-China economic and trade cooperation. The ROK looks forward to strengthening communication and coordination with China, facing up to history, and jointly safeguarding regional peace and stability.

The two sides also exchanged views on coordination and cooperation in multilateral fields.
