On the evening of February 15, 2025 local time, Member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and Foreign Minister Wang Yi met with Austrian Interim Chancellor and Foreign Minister Alexander Schallenberg at the latter's request on the sidelines of the Munich Security Conference.
Noting that the world currently faces overlapping security challenges and economic risks as well as an array of interwoven factors of instability and uncertainty, Wang Yi said that the international community is concerned about division and confrontation and has a yearning for peace and stability. The focus of this year's Munich Security Conference on multipolarization is timely. China's original aspirations remain unchanged, which conforms to the trend of peaceful development and consistently play a positive role in a changing world. As a permanently neutral country, Austria has long played the role of a bridge-builder and mediator in international affairs. China is ready to work with Austria to jointly voice support for upholding multilateralism, safeguarding the authority of the United Nations (U.N.), defending the international rule of law and resisting unilateral bullying. China welcomes Austria to seize the new opportunities brought by China's new development, deepen mutually beneficial cooperation between both sides, and advance China-Austria relations to continue being at the forefront of China-EU relations. This year marks the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and the European Union (EU). China is ready to work with European countries, including Austria, to invigorate China-EU relations and drive progress in the next 50 years.
Alexander Schallenberg said that Austria and China respect each other and have conducted close cooperation on bilateral and multilateral issues. Austria cherishes its relations with China and is ready to strengthen dialogue and cooperation. Decoupling and severing of industrial and supply chains do not conform to the common interests of all parties; instead, open cooperation is key to achieving development and prosperity. Austria appreciates China's adherence to multilateralism and is ready to work with China to uphold the purposes and principles of the U.N. Charter and defend the post-World War II international order. Austria highly values China's influence as a major country and looks forward to China's application of Oriental wisdom to play an important role in promoting peace.
The two sides also had an exchange of views on the situation in the Middle East, among others.
