On August 30, 2025, Member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and Minister of Foreign Affairs Wang Yi met in Tianjin with Secretary-General of the United Nations (U.N.) António Guterres, who is in China to attend the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Summit 2025.
Wang Yi stated that this year marks the 80th anniversary of the victory of the World Anti-Fascist War as well as the 80th anniversary of the founding of the United Nations. Over the past eight decades, the United Nations has played an irreplaceable role in safeguarding world peace and advancing human progress. As the global landscape is undergoing profound changes and the world is at a crossroads over which path to follow, the role of the United Nations can only be strengthened rather than weakened. The best way to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the founding of the United Nations is to uphold a correct historical perspective on World War II, adhere to multilateralism, and support the United Nations in playing a central role in international affairs. As a responsible major country and a permanent member of the U.N. Security Council, China looks forward to deepening all-round cooperation with the United Nations, and supports the United Nations in building a more effective global governance system through reform to bring about a bright future of peace, security, prosperity and progress for the world.
António Guterres said that he was pleased to attend the SCO Summit in China. Over the years, the United Nations and the Shanghai Cooperation Organization have carried out productive cooperation. At present, the international community is confronted with many challenges, with unilateralism and power politics posing grave impacts on the United Nations and the multilateral system. Countries of the Global South, with China as a representative, are playing an increasingly important role and effectively promoting world peace and development. He highly commended China's commitment to multilateralism and its firm support for the work of the United Nations. The United Nations will remain committed to improving quality and efficiency, and is willing to work closely with China to jointly advance the improvement of global governance.
The two sides also exchanged views on issues of common interest and concern, including climate change response, artificial intelligence, and the situation in the Middle East.
