On September 13, 2025 local time, Member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and Foreign Minister Wang Yi held talks with Slovenian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign and European Affairs Tanja Fajon in Ljubljana.
Wang Yi stated that China and Slovenia enjoy a traditional friendship and that China was one of the first countries to recognize Slovenia's independence. For over 30 years since the establishment of diplomatic relations, China has upheld the principle that all countries, big or small, are equal and worked with Slovenia to advance bilateral relations beyond differences in social systems, treating each other with sincerity and trust, and achieving mutual benefit and win-win results. This is particularly valuable amid the complex and ever-changing international situation. As the world enters a new period of turbulence and transformation, it is even more necessary for both sides to uphold the original aspiration of establishing diplomatic relations, which is characterized by mutual respect, equality and win-win cooperation, enhance communication, deepen mutual trust, bolster cooperation, and continuously enrich the strategic connotation of the China-Slovenia partnership.
Wang Yi said that the "Taiwan independence" forces are currently seeking to promote separatist activities, which is a challenge to the victorious outcome of World War II and a disruption to the post-war international order. He expressed belief that the Slovenian side will continue to abide by the one-China principle, support the Chinese people in opposing the "Taiwan independence" activities, and consolidate the political foundation of bilateral relations. China is willing to strengthen exchanges at all levels with Slovenia, expand cooperation in new sectors such as high-end manufacturing, scientific and technological innovation, health and medicine, green energy and artificial intelligence, and provide a fair, open, and non-discriminatory business environment for enterprises of the two countries. Both sides should leverage their respective strengths, promote bilateral trade balance with an open attitude, and jointly support economic globalization. Wang Yi expressed the hope that Slovenia will play an active role in promoting the sound and stable development of relations between China and the European Union (EU).
Wang Yi said that President Xi Jinping has proposed the Global Governance Initiative, which upholds five core concepts that align with the shared aspiration of the international community. The initiative aims to reform and improve global governance and consolidate the authority and core position of the United Nations (U.N.), and has been widely welcomed and supported by the international community. China is willing to enhance collaboration with Slovenia and other countries, uphold multilateralism, join hands to build a more just and equitable global governance system, and jointly safeguard world peace and development.
Tanja Fajon said that China is an important cooperative partner of Slovenia and the EU. Slovenia and China have a profound traditional friendship and solid mutual trust, and bilateral relations enjoy stable and sound development, with rapid growth in bilateral trade and investment. Slovenia cherishes its friendship with China and firmly adheres to the one-China policy. Slovenia looks forward to becoming a gateway for Chinese enterprises to enter Europe, expanding two-way investment and broadening cooperation between the two countries in new energy and other fields. It is of vital importance for the EU and China to maintain positive and constructive dialogue and cooperation. Slovenia supports the stable development of EU-China relations. As the world today is confronted with many challenges, it is very necessary to reform and improve global governance. Slovenia is willing to strengthen solidarity and cooperation with China to jointly uphold the original aspiration of multilateralism and the purposes of the U.N. Charter.
The two sides also exchanged views on international and regional hotspot issues such as the Ukraine crisis and the situation in the Middle East.
