Lesotho's Prime Minister Ntsokoane Samuel Matekane Meets with Wang Yi

On January 10, 2026 local time, Lesotho's Prime Minister Ntsokoane Samuel Matekane met with Member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and Foreign Minister Wang Yi in Maseru.

Ntsokoane Samuel Matekane asked Wang Yi to convey his New Year greetings and best wishes to Chinese leaders and welcomed Foreign Minister Wang Yi to the "Kingdom in the Sky". He stated that Lesotho cherishes its friendship with China and the strategic partnership between the two countries, and expressed gratitude for China's valuable support for the development of African countries, including Lesotho. Lesotho adheres to the one-China principle, and firmly supports China in safeguarding its core interests. Lesotho is willing to strengthen strategic mutual trust with China, expand people-to-people and cultural exchanges, jointly implement the outcomes of the Beijing Summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC), and deepen cooperation in areas such as infrastructure, manufacturing and energy. Ntsokoane Samuel Matekane expressed appreciation for China's implementation of a zero-tariff policy for African products, which will provide a new impetus for Lesotho's development. Lesotho highly appreciates the series of major initiatives put forth by President Xi Jinping and is willing to strengthen solidarity and cooperation with China on multilateral platforms such as BRICS to jointly address global challenges.

Wang Yi conveyed the cordial greetings from Chinese leaders to Prime Minister Ntsokoane Samuel Matekane and congratulated Lesotho on the 60th anniversary of its independence. He commended the Government of Lesotho for focusing on economic development and steering the country onto a path of sustainable growth. Wang Yi noted that since the 2024 FOCAC Beijing Summit, the two sides have worked together to advance the ten partnership actions, successfully implementing a number of key projects that have significantly contributed to Lesotho's development and revitalization. China is ready to work with Lesotho to strengthen exchanges on governance experience, enhance cooperation in multilateral fields, and promote greater development of the China-Lesotho strategic partnership.

Wang Yi said that China appreciates Lesotho's commitment to the one-China principle and supports Lesotho in defending state sovereignty, national dignity, and development rights and interests. Both sides should continue to firmly support each other. China will accelerate the implementation of its zero-tariff policy for Africa in Lesotho, expand bilateral economic, trade, investment, and industrial cooperation, facilitate greater access for Lesotho's specialty products to the Chinese market, and continuously boost Lesotho's national development. China will continue to stand firmly with African countries, uphold justice for the Global South, including Lesotho, oppose unilateralism and bullying acts, and work together to promote the building of a community with a shared future for humanity.

On the same day, Wang Yi also held talks with Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Relations of Lesotho Lejone Mpotjoana.
