On January 28, 2026, Member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and Foreign Minister Wang Yi held talks in Beijing with Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov, who is on a visit to China.

Wang Yi noted that last year was a significant year in the history of China-Azerbaijan relations. President Xi Jinping and President Ilham Aliyev held two meetings and jointly announced the establishment of a comprehensive strategic partnership between China and Azerbaijan, guiding the China-Azerbaijan relationship into a new phase of high-quality, all-around development. China and Azerbaijan should be strategic partners who prioritize each other, are reliable, and pursue win-win cooperation. This is a political decision made by the two heads of state. No matter how the international situation evolves, China will view and develop China-Azerbaijan relations from a strategic perspective. China is ready to work with Azerbaijan to strengthen political mutual trust, carry forward the traditional friendship, deepen mutually beneficial cooperation, enhance international collaboration, and jointly achieve new accomplishments in China-Azerbaijan relations.

Wang Yi said that China appreciates Azerbaijan's long-standing firm support on issues concerning China's core interests. China will continue to support Azerbaijan in safeguarding its sovereignty and vital interests and in pursuing a development path suited to its national conditions. Both sides should maintain exchanges at all levels, deepen experience sharing on state governance, promote people-to-people and cultural exchanges, and enhance mutual understanding between the two peoples. The two sides should further synergize development strategies, and take the high-quality Belt and Road cooperation as a guide to explore more areas of converging interests, foster more growth drivers for cooperation, contribute to the modernization of both countries, and benefit the people of both nations.

Wang Yi stated that as the world has entered a period of turbulence and transformation, China and Azerbaijan, both as Global South countries, should join hands to practice true multilateralism, uphold the international system with the United Nations at its core, advocate for an equal and orderly multipolar world and universally beneficial and inclusive economic globalization, and make the global governance system more just and equitable. China highly commends the work Azerbaijan has done since it assumed the presidency of the Conference on Interaction and Confidence Building Measures in Asia (CICA), and stands ready to support Azerbaijan in hosting the CICA summit this year.

Jeyhun Bayramov said that Azerbaijan-China relations are based on mutual respect, mutual trust, and mutual support. Last year, the relationship between the two countries was upgraded, injecting strong momentum into bilateral strategic cooperation. Azerbaijan firmly believes that China's development is an opportunity for the world, and supports the four global initiatives proposed by President Xi Jinping. Azerbaijan is willing to join the Group of Friends of Global Governance. Azerbaijan always adheres to the one-China principle, and strongly condemns "Taiwan independence". Azerbaijan is ready to take the 35th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries next year as an opportunity to intensify high-level exchanges, strengthen inter-party exchanges, expand exchanges and cooperation in areas such as economy, trade, investment, connectivity, science and technology, education, and tourism, deepen coordination and cooperation within multilateral frameworks such as the CICA and the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, continuously advance Azerbaijan-China relations, and make greater contributions to regional peace and prosperity.

The two sides also had an in-depth exchange of views on international and regional issues of mutual concern.
