On August 13, 2025, the ninth round of consultations between the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of China and the Ministries of Foreign Affairs of the Caribbean countries having diplomatic relations with China was held in Beijing. The meeting was co-chaired by Vice Minister Miao Deyu of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of China and Permanent Secretary Roxie McLeish-Hutchinson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Grenada. Permanent secretaries or senior representatives from the foreign ministries of nine countries, including Antigua and Barbuda, the Bahamas, Barbados, Dominica, Grenada, Guyana, Jamaica, Suriname, Trinidad and Tobago, were present.
Miao Deyu stated that in recent years, under the strategic guidance of President Xi Jinping and the leaders of the Caribbean countries, the relations between China and the Caribbean countries have maintained a sound momentum of development. China and the Caribbean countries are important forces in the Global South, and China is ready to make joint efforts with the Caribbean countries to continuously elevate the China-Caribbean comprehensive cooperative partnership to new levels. Roxie McLeish-Hutchinson said that China has long supported the development of the Caribbean countries and is a reliable cooperative partner of the Caribbean countries. The Caribbean countries are willing to strengthen mutually beneficial cooperation with China and achieve common development.
Both sides agreed that mutually beneficial cooperation between China and the Caribbean countries in various fields has yielded fruitful results, enhanced the well-being of their people, and set an example of South-South cooperation. The United Nations (UN) General Assembly Resolution 2758 brooks no challenge, and the Caribbean countries reaffirmed their commitment to the one-China principle. The two sides should expand cooperation in such fields as economy and trade, infrastructure construction, agriculture, healthcare, science and technology, civil aviation, disaster prevention and mitigation, and green development; strengthen exchanges and cooperation among universities, think tanks, and media to tighten cultural and people-to-people ties; work together to fully implement the outcomes of the Fourth Ministerial Meeting of the China-CELAC Forum and promote the building of a China-LAC community with a shared future; continue to enhance communication and coordination in multilateral platforms such as the UN Security Council to play a constructive role in addressing the question concerning Haiti; urge the international community to pay attention to the concerns of small island developing countries like those in the Caribbean regarding climate change, and jointly build a global climate governance system that is fair, rational, cooperative and beneficial to all.
