Foreign Minister Li Zhaoxing Meets with Vanuatu's Foreign Minister Moana Carcasses, Micronesian Secretary for Department of Foreign affairs Sebastian Anefal and Deputy Secretary General of the Pacific Islands Forum Iosefa Maiava

On the morning of April 27, 2004, Foreign Minister Li Zhaoxing met respectively with Vanuatu's Foreign Minister Moana Carcasses, Micronesian Secretary for Department of Foreign affairs Sebastian Anefal and Deputy Secretary General of the Pacific Islands Forum (PIF) Iosefa Maiava, who are attending the 60th Session of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) in Shanghai.

When meeting with Vanuatu's Foreign Minister Carcasses, Li said that the relations between China and Vanuatu have enjoyed smooth and steady development. Since last year, Vanuatu's Prime Minister and Deputy-Prime Minister have visited China in succession. China welcomes the upcoming visit by Parliamentary Presiding Officer Speaker of the Parliament Roger Abiut to China in the second half of this year. The contacts between top leaders of the two countries have enhanced their mutual understanding and mutual trust, and have promoted their bilateral cooperation. Developing long-term and stable China-Vanuatu relations is in line with the fundamental interests of the two peoples. China would like to work together with Vanuatu to promote mutually beneficial cooperation. Li expressed his appreciations for Vanuatu's stance of adhering to the one-China principle.

Carcasses noted that the Vanuatu's government is thankful for China's long-term and sincere assistance. Developing Vanuatu–China relations is in line with the fundamental interests of the people of Vanuatu. The Vanuatu's government will continue to adhere to the one-China policy and to support China's lofty cause of peaceful reunification.

When meeting with Micronesian Secretary for Department of Foreign affairs Sebastian Anefal, Li said that the two countries enjoy solid foundation for economic and trade cooperation with high complementarity in economy. Micronesia has abundant fishing and tourist resources while China with its vast market boasts practical technology, which can meet the needs of the Island countries. On the occasion of the 15th anniversary of establishment of China-Micronesia relations this year, the two sides should actively implement consensuses reached by the two heads of state, strengthen communication and exchanges and maintain the good momentum for development of the bilateral relations.

Anefal indicated that the Micronesian government would like to carry out close cooperation with China, unswervingly support the Chinese government's stance on the Taiwan issue and continuously expand the areas for the bilateral cooperation so as to promote the development of Micronesia–China relations.


When meeting with Deputy Secretary General of the Pacific Islands Forum (PIF) Iosefa Maiava, Li said that the Chinese government attaches great importance to the PIF' s role in international and regional affairs and stands ready to develop the friendly and cooperative relations with the PIF and its members. China and the PIF are both committed to safeguarding the interests of developing countries and share identical or similar stances on many international and regional issues. Li introduced China's stance on the Taiwan issue and expressed the willingness to make joint efforts with the PIF in a bid to push forward the friendly and cooperative relations between the two sides on the basis of mutual respect, equality and mutual benefit, openness to each other, mutual prosperity and consensus through consultation.


Maiava expressed his thanks for China's support for the PIF and noted that the PIF Secretariat would like to seize the good opportunity for the Asia-Pacific economic development and promote the development of the relations of its members with China in the hope that China would play a bigger role in affairs of the Asia-Pacific region. Maiava reiterated the PIF's adherence to the one-China policy.
