On May 26, 2026 local time, Member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and Foreign Minister Wang Yi answered questions from the media on the spot after presiding over the United Nations Security Council High-Level Meeting “Upholding the Purposes and Principles of the U.N. Charter and Strengthening the U.N.-centered International System”.
When asked about China’s views and suggestions for resolving the current deadlock over the Iran situation, Wang Yi said China has been working to resolve the current conflict. President Xi Jinping has put forward a four-point proposal, pointing the way for safeguarding and promoting peace in the Middle East. China has maintained communication and coordination with the main parties involved as well as key regional and international partners. China believes that the sovereignty, security and territorial integrity of regional countries must be respected, civilians and non-military targets must be protected, shipping lane safety and energy infrastructure must be secured, and rules of the nuclear non-proliferation regime must be followed.
The key to the current situation is US-Iran negotiations. China supports the active mediation efforts by Pakistan and other countries, as well as the efforts made by both the U.S. and Iran. It takes more than one cold day to freeze a river three feet deep, and resolving long-standing grievances cannot be done overnight. But every step forward in negotiations brings more hope for peace, and ending the conflict one day earlier means fewer civilian casualties. We hope the parties involved will firmly commit to a ceasefire and an end to the fighting, continue moving toward each other, and bring peace back to the Middle East as soon as possible.
