Sixth Steering Committee Meeting on China-Vietnam Cooperation Held in Beijing

On May 11, 2013, the sixth meeting of the China-Vietnam Steering Committee for Bilateral Cooperation was held in Beijing. Yang Jiechi, Chairman on China side and China's State Councilor and Nguyen Thien Nhan, Chairman on Vietnam side and Vietnamese Deputy Prime Minister co-chaired the meeting.

Yang Jiechi pointed out that the China-Vietnam Steering Committee for Bilateral Cooperation has been playing a key role in enhancing political mutual trust and promoting result-oriented cooperation between the two countries since its establishment seven years ago. China and Vietnam are close neighbours linked by mountains and rivers and enjoy an ever-deepening relationship and interdependence to each other. It is therefore more important than ever before to strengthen the unity and cooperation between the two Parties and the two nations. The two sides should effectively implement the important agreements reached between General Secretary Xi Jinping and General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong. China and Vietnam should take a strategic and long-term perspective in navigating the direction of the bilateral relations, boosting comprehensive strategic cooperation and doing more to promote the bilateral relationship so as to accumulate more positive energy and benefit the two peoples. The two sides would maintain high-level contact and deepen strategic communication. The two sides would seek effectiveness in the practical cooperation, promote people-to-people exchanges and strengthen the friendship between social communities, while effectively manage and properly handle the differences on the South China Sea issue with the relevant mechanisms for negotiation and dialogue, to bolster maritime cooperation, trying to transform the differences into the opportunity for cooperation.

Nguyen Thien Nhan remarked that the Party and the Govenment of Vietnam attach great importance to the comprehensive strategic cooperation between Vietnam and China and are ready to continuously deepen the friendly comradeship and brotherhood between the two Parties and two governments, enhance political mutual trust, promote comprehensive practical cooperation and properly settle the South China Sea issue.

The two sides reviewed the progress made over the past year for practical cooperation in various fields and agreed to further promote Party-to-Party exchanges, as well as cooperation in the fields of national defense, law enforcement security, economy and trade, information, maritime affairs, people-to-people exchanges, social and cultural exchanges , and China-ASEAN relations, working to achieve more for bilateral cooperation.

Present at the meeting were representatives from the Chinese side of Ministry of Foreign Affairs, International Department of the Central Committee of Communist Party of China, Ministry of National Defense, National Development and Reform Commission, Ministry of Public Security, Ministry of State Security, Ministry of Finance, Ministry of Commerce, and from Provinces of Guangdong, Yunnan and Hainan, and Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, and of the Vietnamese side, the representatives from the Communist Party of Vietnam, relevant government departments, the military and local govenments. Prior to the meeting, secretaries general of the Steering Committee of the two sides met each other and the counterpart talks were held between relevant ministries and local government departments.
