Address by Ambassador Ma Zhaoxu at the New Year Celebration of Chinese Communities of South Australia

23 February, 2015

H.E. Mr. Hieu Van Le, Governor of South Australia

Mr. Charles Tran, President of OCA

Distinguished guests,

Dear friends,

I am very delighted to celebrate with you all the Chinese New Year of the Sheep. I would like to extend my best wishes to all the Chinese communities in South Australia for a healthy, successful and happy New Year!

For years, the Chinese communities in South Australia have been making significant contributions to the social, economic and cultural development of Australia, which has won you respect from people of all sectors in the Australian society. Caring about the development of your mother country China, you have acted as a bridge of friendship between China and Australia. Your love for the motherland and your contribution to its development will always be remembered.

The just passed 2014 marked a whole new era of China’s efforts for deepening comprehensive reform with outstanding achievements made in various social undertakings. 2014 also witnessed abundant progress in China-Australia ties. President Xi Jinping paid a successful state visit to Australia, during which the two countries elevated their ties to comprehensive strategic partnership and announced the substantive conclusion of bilateral FTA talks. It was a milestone visit of great importance, opening up a new chapter of bilateral relations. In the coming year, the two sides will work together to fully deliver on the outcomes of President Xi’s visit and the important consensus reached by the two sides, so as to push for even more progress in bilateral partnership to the benefit of our two peoples.

What’s worth-mentioning is that, the two sides agreed to set up a consulate-general in Adelaide during President Xi’s visit. Being the fifth of its kind in Australia, the new consulate-general is bound to further promote South Australia’s exchanges and cooperation with China in all fields and provide even better service to the Chinese communities here in South Australia. I hope the new consulate-general could have your strong support and assistance.

Today is day 5 of the Chinese Lunar Year of the Sheep. Sheep is quite a special animal for our two countries. It symbolizes happiness and harmony in Chinese traditions. Australia used to be described as ‘the country riding on sheep’s back’. Many Chinese people got to know Australia with one of its most famous folk song ‘Click Go the Shears’. May the year of the sheep bring prosperity and good luck to you all.

To conclude, I also wish the Chinese Community in South Australia bigger success in contributing to China-Australia relations and friendship.

Thank you.
