The Embassy of the People's Republic of China in Brunei hosted the Virtual Reception in Celebration of the 72nd Anniversary of the Founding of the People's Republic of China and the 30th Anniversary of the Establishment of Diplomatic Relations between China and Brunei

On September 30, the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in Brunei hosted the virtual reception in Celebration of the 72nd Anniversary of the Founding of the People’s Republic of China and the 30th Anniversary of the Establishment of Diplomatic Relations between China and Brunei. Her Royal Highness Princess Hajah Masna, Ambassador-at-Large at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Brunei Darussalam attended the reception as the guest of honor. Nearly 230 guests joined the virtual reception, including Legislative Council members, senior government and military officials, representatives of Chinese communities, enterprises and students and friends from all walks of life in Brunei.

H.E. Yu Hong warmly welcomed all the guests and thanked them for their long-term care and support for the development of China-Brunei relations. H.E. Yu Hong related in her remarks that this year carries special significance in the history of China-Brunei relations, as it not only marks the 72nd anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China (PRC), the centennial anniversary of the founding of the Communist Party of China (CPC), but also the double 30th anniversaries of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Brunei, and dialogue relations between China and ASEAN. Over the past hundred years, the Communist Party of China has led the Chinese people onto the path towards national rejuvenation and modernization, China is now the world’s second largest economy, enjoying extensive support from the Chinese people, and growing in composite strength and international standing. After Huawei CFO Meng Wanzhou regained her freedom and returned home, she said, where there is a five-star red flag, there is a beacon of faith. The Chinese government has gained very high degree of support from its people.

In the face of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Chinese government has taken the decisive measures, and the life and safety of its people are in safe hands. Presently, over 70% of the 1.4-billion population is fully vaccinated in China. In 2020, China was the world’s only major economy to have registered positive growth in foreign trade in goods. China adheres to an independent foreign policy of peace, actively promotes the building of a community with a shared future for mankind, provided aid to 166 countries and international organizations. China has already provided more than 1.25 billion doses of finished and bulk vaccines to over 100 countries worldwide and the COVAX facility, the largest amount in the world. China will donate another 100 million doses vaccines to developing countries before the end of this year, with a total number of two billion doses in the course of this year.

H.E. Yu Hong referred that Chinese President Xi Jinping and His Majesty the Sultan of Brunei Darussalam sent congratulatory messages on the 30th Anniversary of the Establishment of Diplomatic Relations between China and Brunei. China-Brunei relations were upgraded to a strategic partnership of cooperation when Chinese President H.E. Xi Jinping visited Brunei in 2018. China appreciates that Brunei has always upheld One China policy. The two countries jointly promote all-round cooperation under the Belt and Road Initiative.

H.E. Yu Hong emphasized that, China and Brunei have been extending each other support and solidarity in this trying time. Since the onslaught of the pandemic, the support and sympathy from Brunei to China has greatly boosted the confidence of the Chinese people in overcoming the difficulties. China also came forward with anti-pandemic supplies and funds for Brunei. China has donated two batches of 152,000 doses of Sinopharm vaccines in total. Chinese businesses offered technical support and assistance to Brunei’s fight against the pandemic. China and Brunei have been working together to achieve mutual benefits and win-win cooperation. China has become Brunei's third largest trading partner and the biggest source of foreign direct investment. Bilateral cooperation in civil aviation, healthcare, culture, tourism, sports, education, judiciary and other areas have been deepened continuously. China wishes to join hands with Brunei to further deepen and promote cooperation for bigger progress, and together, usher in the new glory for the next 30 years of China-Brunei friendship.

Her Royal Highness Princess Hajah Masna congratulated the 72nd Anniversary of the Founding of the People’s Republic of China and the 30th Anniversary of the Establishment of Diplomatic Relations between China and Brunei, and recalled fond memories of visiting China. She emphasized that although formal diplomatic relations between Brunei and China were established in 1991, the shared history dated back to 2,000 years. Since 1991, the two countries’ leaders have worked closely to lay a solid foundation for the relations, based on mutual respect, trust and peaceful co-existence. The two countries’ leaders exchanged of visits frequently, His Majesty has visited China twelve times and developed close rapport with all the leaders he has met with. Brunei deeply valued the warm and traditional ties enjoyed at all levels, and the elevation of the two countries’ relations to a Strategic Cooperative Relationship in 2013, and later to a Strategic Cooperative Partnership in 2018. The two countries’ cooperation has flourished in the areas of trade and investment, energy, agriculture and fisheries, infrastructure, and people-to-people exchanges. China has established joint ventures in downstream oil and gas, banking services and port management, which provides linkages to China’s Belt and Road Initiative. Brunei was delighted to see the two countries have established platforms in promoting greater friendship and understanding between youths and the air travel became easier with direct flights. Brunei was ready to welcome tourists from China when the situation improved. Brunei and China had continued to support each other in the global fight against COVID-19, and would like to express gratitude for the recent delivery of a hundred thousand doses of Sinopharm vaccines, as well as for the virology lab,which reflect the long standing friendship shared between the two countries. This year is also the 30th Anniversary of ASEAN-China Dialogue Relations. China is an important strategic partner and the both sides will continue to work closely together in promoting peace, stability and prosperity for the shared benefit of the peoples of the two countries.

At the reception, H.E. Yu Hong and Her Royal Highness Princess Hajah Masna jointly unveiled the “First Day Cover” marking the 30th Anniversary of the Establishment of Diplomatic Relations between China and Brunei, expressing their best wishes for the friendship between the two countries. The video “Join Hands for the People”, and two videos edited by the Chinese Embassy “ Memories of 30 Years Friendship and Cooperation between China and Brunei 1991-2021” and “Fighting COVID-19 Together for a Shared Future”, were also played. The guests expressed their appreciation for China’s generous assistance in Brunei’s fight against the COVID-19, and hoped that the two countries would work together to overcome the pandemic at an early date. They also wished China prosperity and everlasting friendship between the two countries.
