Remarks of the Spokesperson of the Chinese Embassy on the Hong Kong Related Statement by the Canadian Foreign Minister
2020/04/21

On April 19, Foreign Minister of Canada issued a statement, making irresponsible remarks over the Hong Kong police's arrest of anti-China rabble-rousers in Hong Kong, such as Jimmy Lai Chee-ying and Martin Lee Chu-ming on April 18, which constitutes gross interference in China's internal affairs. We express our strong dissatisfaction with and firm opposition to this.

Since its return to the motherland, the policy of "one country, two systems" and Hong Kong people governing Hong Kong with a high degree of autonomy has been faithfully implemented, and the Hong Kong residents have enjoyed democratic rights and freedom like never before. However, the violent and illegal protest activities organized by the anti-China elements have severely damaged the rule of law and social order in Hong Kong. It is in accordance with law for the Hong Kong Police to take action against those suspected of organizing and participating in unauthorized assemblies, which is the justified and lawful power conferred on the Hong Kong SAR government by the Basic Law and no foreign country has the right to interfere.

The rule of law is a core value of Hong Kong society. Everyone is equal before the law. By blatantly endorsing the anti-China elements in Hong Kong in disregard of the facts, the Canadian side will only bring damage to the rule of law and stability in Hong Kong, as is not in Canada's interest. We urge the Canadian side to abide by the basic norms governing international relations, support the Hong Kong police in enforcing the law, and immediately stop meddling in Hong Kong affairs and China's internal affairs in any form.
