Remarks by Chinese Ambassador-Designate H.E. Mr. Yu Dunhai upon his Arrival in Malta

It is my great honor to be appointed as the fifteenth Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the People's Republic of China to the Republic of Malta. Known as the heart of the Mediterranean, Malta has a long history and friendly people. I’m so delighted to be here.

Right now, the world is caught between a pandemic of the century and momentous changes never seen in the last one hundred years. The international landscape keeps evolving in profound ways and countries share but one future. Unity and cooperation is needed more than ever between China and Malta. As the new Ambassador, I’m keenly aware that I shoulder both a glorious mission and an enormous responsibility.

Since the establishment of diplomatic ties between our two countries almost 50 years ago, China-Malta relationship has maintained strong vigor and vitality, despite the changing international environment. It sets a model of peaceful coexistence between countries of different size, population, cultural traditions and political systems. We have solid political trust rooted in mutual respect and understanding, close cooperation aimed at common prosperity, and fraternal sentiments between our two peoples who have helped each other through difficult times.

China assisted Malta in building the dry dock, the breakwater and the Chinese Garden of serenity. They are monuments of our friendship. Malta, on the other hand, has been firmly committed to the one China policy and respects China’s core interests. In particular, during our evacuation operation from Libya in February 2011, Malta helped us bring almost 5,000 Chinese nationals back home safely via Malta, which the government and people of China will always bear in mind.

In 2018, the two governments signed a memorandum of understanding on Belt and Road cooperation, mapping out a new blueprint for enhancing our cooperation in the new era. Closer people-to-people exchanges between China and Malta not only deepens our friendship, but also contributes to the exchanges and mutual learning between China and the west.

Since the outbreak of COVID-19, China and Malta have stood side by side to counter the challenge. In China, with united and arduous efforts, we have brought COVID-19 under control and the economy is recovering. China is actively fostering a new development paradigm with domestic circulation as the mainstay and domestic and international circulations reinforcing each other, embarking on a new journey toward fully building a modern socialist country. China stands ready to share development opportunities with Malta and other European countries for a win-win future.

I look forward to joining hands with friends from all sectors of Malta, to further cement our political mutual trust, deepen practical cooperation, enhance dialogue and communication, and promote people-to-people exchanges, with a view to push China-Malta relations to a new high and make contributions to the building of a new type of international relations and a community with a shared future for mankind.
