Remarks by Ambassador Zhang Yiming at the Signing Ceremony of Medical Equipment Donation

Hon. Juliet Kavetuna, Deputy Minister of Health and Social Services,

Distinguished guests, ladies and gentlemen,

Good morning.

Two days ago, led by H.E. Mr. Li Zhanshu, the Chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress of China on his official visit to Namibia, we gathered here, witnessing three cataract patients regaining brightness owing to the Brightness Action Campaign and sharing their joy and happiness.

The Brightness Action Campaign was launched by the Chinese Government to help alleviate the suffering of people with cataract by providing free eye surgeries. Since its inception in 2011, thousands of cataract patients in more than 20 countries have been cured, free of charge, mainly in Africa, Southeast Asia and the Caribbean. This charitable project has been widely acclaimed and praised as part of China’s efforts to help the developing countries in terms of public health welfare.

The Brightness Action Campaign came to Namibia for the first time last week and more than 40 patients have been cured, and 160 more patients will be treated in Rundu in the coming week. On the one hand, I am glad that the Project has benefited so many Namibians, on the other hand, I am delighted to notice that the local medical professionals cooperate very well with the Chinese medical team and play an important role in the project.

As a routine practice under the Brightness Action Campaign, all the medical equipment was donated to the local hospital or authority in a bid to sustain the benefits for more people. Today it’s my pleasure to be here again to attend the Signing Ceremony of the Medical Equipment Donation.

I just remember what H.E. President Hage Geingob said when he met with H.E. Chairman Li Zhanshu. He said, Namibians ought to be proud of this high level of friendship called “comprehensive strategic cooperative partnership”, which laid a solid foundation for the long-term sound and stable development of bilateral relations. Actually, as All-weather friend and comprehensive strategic cooperative partner, China will attach much more importance to China-Namibia relations and it can be expected that there will be more cooperation and friendly exchanges in many fields in the future. I am sure that this Project will facilitate more cooperative projects between our two countries, serving as a milestone in our friendly relations.

Meanwhile, I believe that under the framework of the Johannesburg Summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC), and based on our mutual understanding and joint efforts, our partnership in the field of public health as well as other sectors will be further promoted.

Thank you.
