Wang Yi Holds Talks with Cambodian Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Prak Sokhonn

On October 12, 2020 local time, State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi held talks with Cambodian Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Prak Sokhonn in Phnom Penh.

Wang Yi said, choosing Cambodia as the first stop of his visits to Southeast Asia is a testament to the common aspirations of building a community with a shared future of the two countries, and the high-level comprehensive strategic and cooperative partnership. Against the backdrop of the COVID-19, China and Cambodia maintain mutual support, and our bilateral ties have been lifted to a higher level in the concerted fight against the pandemic. China will continue to firmly support Cambodia in safeguarding its national sovereignty and dignity, taking a development path suited to its own national conditions, maintaining stability, developing economy, improving people's livelihood, and playing a bigger role in regional and international arenas.

Wang Yi added, China is ready to deepen strategic communication with Cambodia, and boost bilateral cooperation in all areas. Both sides should continue to maintain high-level exchanges to guide the development of bilateral ties and inject new vitality for cooperation. China will continue to help Cambodia fight the pandemic and provide China-developed COVID-19 vaccines on a priority basis when the development is completed and the vaccines are available for use. China is willing to expand investment to help Cambodia develop industrial system and improve its own development capabilities. The signing of the FTA will boost the confidence for other countries in Cambodian development, and help increase the two-way trade to 10 billion U.S. dollars earlier.

Wang Yi pointed out, China commends Cambodia's work with China to uphold the common interests of both countries and other developing countries, maintain international fairness and justice, and safeguard the basic norms governing international relations. China stands ready to work with Cambodia to step up coordination to ensure the signing of the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) this year, conduct cooperation in fields such as Blue Economy and data security, and prepare commemorative events to mark the 30th anniversary of China-ASEAN dialogue relations, lifting China-ASEAN relations to a higher level. Both sides should promptly implement the outcomes of the Third Lancang-Mekong Cooperation Leaders' Meeting, deepen water resource cooperation, and build synergy between the New International Land-Sea Trade Corridor and Lancang-Mekong Cooperation to inject more vitality for the economic recovery in Lancang-Mekong region. We should uphold multilateralism, defend the authority of the United Nations, and oppose unilateralism and bullying in any forms.

Prak Sokhonn said, Cambodia attaches great importance to ties with China, and stands ready to further promote the building of the community with a shared future with China in marking the 10th anniversary of the bilateral comprehensive strategic and cooperative partnership. Cambodia thanks China for its help in COVID-19 prevention and control and in economic recovery. Cambodia hopes to strengthen cooperation with China to fight the pandemic, materialize the consensus achieved at meetings of the China-Cambodia Intergovernmental Coordination Committee, and maintain the strong development momentum of bilateral ties. China not only scores a major victory in the fight against the pandemic, but also assists other countries in containing the virus, which enhances international solidarity and cooperation and demonstrates strong leadership. To support China is to support international fairness and justice, the multilateralism, and the international system with the UN as its core. Cambodia appreciates and supports the Global Initiative on Data Security proposed by China, and will continue to cooperate with China in international affairs, and jointly maintain common interests, and safeguard regional and global peace and stability.

The two ministers agree to establish "fast lane" and "green lane" for personnel and logistics between two countries. They also visit the "Photo Exhibition of China-Cambodia Cooperation in Fight Against COVID-19", and have an in-depth exchange of views on regional and international issues of mutual concern.
