The Chinese Embassy in Sweden Holds the Reception Celebrating the 70th Anniversary of the Founding of the People's Republic of China

On 20 September 2019, Chinese Ambassador to Sweden Mr. Gui Congyou hosted the Reception Celebrating the 70th Anniversary of the Founding of the People’s Republic of China at the Winter Garden of Grand Hotel in Stockholm. Over 600 people, including Swedish Minister for Foreign Trade Anna Hallberg, State Secretary of Ministry for Foreign Affairs Annika Söder, former Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations Jan Eliasson, Chief of Defence Staff Vice Admiral Jonas Haggren, Director-General of Council for Higher Education Karin Röding, Governor of Gotland Anders Flanking, Governor of Uppsala Göran Enander, Deputy Director-General for Political Affairs and Head of Department for Asia and the Pacific Region of Ministry for Foreign Affairs Cecilia Ruthström-Ruin and other members from the Swedish Government and various communities, members of Chinese and Swedish media, foreign Ambassadors to Sweden, members of local Chinese community, Chinese students and representatives of Chinese companies participated.

In his remarks, Ambassador Gui said that seventy years ago the founding of the People’s Republic opened a new era for the Chinese nation. Over the past 70 years especially the 40 years of reform and opening up, tremendous and rapid changes in China transformed the country. Various social undertakings made significant progress. The Chinese people realized a tremendous transformation from standing up to becoming better-off, achieving what took developed countries several centuries to achieve. Today, socialism with Chinese characteristics has entered a new era, and is advancing towards the dream of building China into a great modern socialist country. The 1.4 billion Chinese people, which account for 1/5 of world population, getting stronger, is an important force for human development and world peace and security, and major contribution to addressing various global threats and challenges.

Ambassador Gui said, on 9 May 1950, Sweden became the first Western country to establish diplomatic relations with China. Next year we are going to celebrate the 70th Anniversary of China-Sweden diplomatic relations, which presents our bilateral relations with new development opportunities. On the basis of mutual respect, equality and non-interference, the Chinese side is willing to further grow China-Sweden relations, expand cooperation in trade and investment, as well as tackling climate change, innovation, sustainable development and smart cities. It is hoped that China and Sweden will remain true to the original aspirations when we established diplomatic ties, join hands together and make due contributions to the development of our two countries, to the development of the world and to building a community with a shared future for human kind.

Swedish Minister for Foreign Trade Hallberg extended her congratulations on the 70th Anniversary of the Founding of the People’s Republic of China, and said that since Sweden became the first Western country to establish diplomatic ties with China in 1950, cooperation between the two countries continued to grow, covering a broad range of areas. China is Sweden’s largest trading partner in Asia and the eighth largest globally, and the two countries maintain a good momentum of trade cooperation. Sweden will have a national pavilion at the second China International Import Expo this November. Sweden and China have mutual interests in promoting innovation and sustainable development, and the two countries need to continue to strengthen cooperation in climate change, environment, energy, urbanization, aging population and health care. The Swedish side recognizes China’s contribution to the UN, and looks forward to continuing to work with China for world peace and security.

During the reception, the videos China 2019, China: Beyond Your Imagination and Beautiful China were played, which presented China’s stories, achievements and natural scenery. The Embassy choir sang the songs Building a Chinese Dream Together and Me and My Country, and the performance was met by rounds of warm applauds. The Stockholm Boys Choir sang Jasmine Flower and the Swedish folk song We Walk Over Dewy Mountains.

Guests at the reception warmly congratulated on the 70th Anniversary of the Founding of the People’s Republic of China, applauded the significant progress of China in the 70 years and wished that China-Sweden friendship and cooperation will continue to scale new heights.
