Xi Jinping Meets with Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras of Greece

On September 28 local time, President Xi Jinping met in New York with Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras of Greece.

Xi Jinping pointed out that Greece is a good friend and a good partner of China. Since the establishment of bilateral diplomatic relationship 43 years ago, both countries have upheld the principle of mutual respect, mutual trust, sincere mutual assistance, mutual benefit and win-win cooperation, maintaining a sound and stable development of bilateral relations. The China-Greece relationship now presents a sound development momentum and bilateral practical cooperation in all fields is making new progress. China is ready to, together with Greece, consolidate traditional friendship, deepen mutual understanding and trust, and bring the bilateral comprehensive strategic partnership to a new height.

Xi Jinping stressed that next year marks the 10th anniversary of the establishment of China-Greece comprehensive strategic partnership, and the bilateral relations will embrace promising prospect. The two sides should maintain high-level engagement, expand exchanges and cooperation between governments, parliaments and political parties, and beef up people-to-people exchanges at all levels. Both sides should push forward practical cooperation following the spirit of mutual benefit and win-win result, intensify people-to-people and cultural exchanges, cement traditional friendship, and make new progress in bilateral cooperation in such areas as establishing cultural centers, students exchanges, jointly training high-level talents as well as tourism industry. The two countries should make full play to the platform of China-Greece Maritime Cooperation Year, facilitating the exchanges and cooperation on maritime development, exploration and protection.

When talking about the European refugee crisis, Xi Jinping stressed that the recent refugee crisis troubling Europe has drawn wide attention from the international community. The root of the current refugee crisis lies in unbalanced development and social instability. In addition to humanitarian aid, the international community should find an effective solution for poverty and social instability and especially eliminate the cause of conflicts in the source countries of refugees. China believes the European countries can make concerted efforts to cope with this major challenge and properly handle relevant issues.

Alexis Tsipras noted that Greece cherishes its traditional friendship with China and its people hold friendship towards the Chinese people. They are grateful for China's valuable assistance. Greece always believes that its cooperation with China is of strategic importance. Under the new circumstance, Greece hopes to further advance this strategic relations, expand bilateral economic and trade exchanges, and boost bilateral cooperation in areas including agriculture, shipping, finance, investment and maritime. It would actively take part in cooperation under the framework of China's "Belt and Road" initiative. Greece agrees that both the symptoms and root causes of the refugee crisis should be addressed.
