Xi Jinping Holds Talks with President Mauricio Macri of Argentina The Two Heads of State Agree to Push China-Argentina Comprehensive Strategic Partnership for Greater Development

On May 17, 2017, President Xi Jinping held talks at the Great Hall of the People with President Mauricio Macri of Argentina. The two heads of state agreed to expand bilateral mutually beneficial and friendly cooperation in various fields and push China-Argentina comprehensive strategic partnership for greater development.

Xi Jinping pointed out 2017 marks the 45th anniversary of the establishment of China-Argentina diplomatic relations. As members of the G20 as well as important emerging market economies, the enhancement between both countries not only conforms to the fundamental interests of the two countries and the two peoples, but also contributes to promoting world prosperity and stability. Both sides should consolidate political consensus, and well guide the development direction of bilateral relations, in a bid to let the outcomes from bilateral cooperation better benefit the two peoples.

Xi Jinping stressed that both sides should firmly strengthen political mutual trust, expand exchanges in governments, legislative institutions, political parties, local affairs and other fields and at all levels, insist on mutual respect, equal treatment and win-win cooperation, and support each other on issues concerning respective core interests. Both sides should deepen the integration of interests, push forward the alignment between the "Belt and Road" initiative and Argentina's domestic development plan, expand cooperation in such areas as infrastructure construction, energy, agriculture, mining and manufacturing industry, well implement the current major cooperation projects in hydro-power, railway and other fields, expand the opening up of markets, and optimize trade structure. China appreciates Argentina for its clear commitment on the fulfillment of obligations in the Article 15 of the Protocol on China's Accession to the World Trade Organization. Both sides should well hold a series of cultural activities to celebrate the 45th anniversary of bilateral diplomatic relations, enhance exchanges and cooperation in such areas as culture, education, science, technology, youth, tourism, local affairs and football, and strengthen cooperation in law enforcement, justice and Antarctic affairs. China is willing to, together with Argentina, maintain close coordination and cooperation in global economic governance, climate change, the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and other major global issues. China supports Argentina in well hosting the 2018 G20 Buenos Aires Summit.

Appreciating Argentina's support and active participation in the "Belt and Road" construction, Xi Jinping stressed that Latin America is the natural extension of the 21st Century Maritime Silk Road. China is willing to strengthen cooperation with Latin America, including realizing the integration of development strategies between both sides, promoting common development and forging a community of common destiny for China and Latin America within the framework of the "Belt and Road" construction.

Mauricio Macri extended warm congratulations on the complete success of the just concluded Belt and Road Forum for International Cooperation, and expressed that Argentina is committed to pushing Argentina-China comprehensive strategic partnership for in-depth development. The country upholds the one-China policy, and stands ready to advance bilateral mutually beneficial cooperation in line with the spirit of mutual respect and trust, enhance mutual understanding between the two peoples, and expand the consensus between both sides. Argentina is willing to make joint efforts with China to push forward the balanced development of bilateral trade, strengthen cooperation in investment, finance, agriculture, science, technology, infrastructure, tourism, people-to-people and cultural engagement and football, deepen relations between Latin America and China, and intensify communication and coordination in international affairs.

After the talks, the two sides issued the Joint Statement between the People's Republic of China and the Republic of Argentina.

The two heads of state jointly witnessed the signing of bilateral cooperation documents covering education, culture, agriculture, quality inspection, sports, investment, energy, railway, finance and other fields.

Prior to the talks, Xi Jinping held a welcoming ceremony for Mauricio Macri at the square outside the East Gate of the Great Hall of the People. Peng Liyuan, Wang Huning, Li Zhanshu, Vice Chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress Chen Changzhi, Yang Jiechi, Vice Chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference Wang Qinmin and others were present.
