Senior Chinese Leader Calls for Better Implementation of Western Development Plan

CHONGQING, Aug. 30 (Xinhua) -- Senior Chinese leader Li Changchun called for enhanced development of the western regions of China during his five-day visit to southwest China's Chongqing Municipality that ended Monday.

China initiated the "develop the west" strategy in 2000 in an effort to help the less-developed areas of western China - six provinces, five autonomous regions and Chongqing Municipality - catch up with the relatively well-off eastern China.

Li, a Standing Committee member of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee Political Bureau, paid visits to enterprises, schools, communities and townships in Chongqing, researching key issues relating to the "develop the west" strategy.

He urged local enterprises to further develop core-technologies and to boost research and development.

He also told local governments to establish more public cultural service institutions to enrich people's cultural lives.

Due to the "develop the west" strategy, the combined gross domestic product of the western regions of China reached 6.69 trillion yuan in 2009, four times the 2000 level.
