State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi Speaks with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov on the Phone

On 27 March, State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi took a phone call from Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov.

Wang noted that at the Extraordinary G20 Leaders’ Summit held via video link on 26 March, President Xi Jinping and President Vladimir Putin both made important statements and put forth key proposals for advancing international cooperation on COVID-19. With highly aligned positions, China and Russia together sent out a strong and positive message to the rest of the world and contributed to the success of the summit. The rapid spread of the virus across the globe poses a common challenge to the international community. China welcomes any proposal that contributes to international cooperation against the virus and stands ready to step up communication and coordination with Russia and other permanent members of the UN Security Council (UNSC) to push for a global response to the outbreak.

Lavrov commended China’s progress in epidemic control and spoke highly of Russia-China cooperation on epidemic response. He noted that Russia is adapting China’s experience to its fight against the virus. Russia appreciates the productive outcomes of the extraordinary summit and its role in promoting international coordination and cooperation in the battle against the disease. Sharing identical or similar positions on major international and regional issues, Russia is ready to enhance coordination and cooperation with China within the UNSC and other multilateral frameworks to counter the global challenge brought by the epidemic.
