Wang Yi: Join Hands to Usher in the Second "Golden Decade" of the BRICS Cooperation

n June 4, 2018 local time, when attending the Formal Meeting of the BRICS Ministers of Foreign Affairs in South Africa, State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi made a statement centering on the topic of "the BRICS practical cooperation and the Johannesburg Summit".

Wang Yi expressed that President Xi Jinping has pointed out that the BRICS countries are like five fingers, each with its own strength; when the BRICS countries come together, we form a fist that can punch. Faced with the complicated changes in world situation, the BRICS countries should firmly stick to the general political direction of the BRICS cooperation, and send out a strong signal of strengthening unity and cooperation, seeking common development, upholding multilateralism and safeguarding fairness and justice at the BRICS Summit to be held in Johannesburg, so as to shoulder the BRICS duty, manifest the BRICS role, and live up to the BRICS responsibility.

--We should deepen economic practical cooperation to contribute to the common development of the five countries. Under the background of the rapid development of the new industrial revolution, we are willing to, combining with the implementation of the Strategy for BRICS Economic Partnership, propose to establish the partnership of new industrial revolution among the BRICS countries, and join hands to speed up the transformation from old economic driving forces to new ones as well as economic transformation and upgrading. We should strengthen macroeconomic policy coordination, safeguard the authority of the multilateral trading system, maintain common interests and development space, and enhance the right to speak and influence in global economic governance together with vast emerging markets and developing countries.

--We should enhance political security cooperation to jointly safeguard international fairness and justice. We should coordinate the stance centering on major international and regional issues, including multilateralism, global governance, counter-terrorism, peacekeeping and cyber security, and speak in one voice. We should jointly safeguard the purposes and principles of the Charter of the United Nations, and promote the building of a new type of international relations featuring mutual respect, fairness, justice, and win-win cooperation, so as to push the international order to develop towards a fairer and more reasonable direction.

--We should expand people-to-people and cultural exchanges to consolidate the foundation for solidarity and coordination. Leaders of the five countries have reached a high degree of consensus on making innovation in people-to-people and cultural exchanges at the BRICS Summit in Goa and the BRICS Summit in Xiamen. The Chinese side highly appreciates and strongly supports South Africa in continuously holding a series of activities including the seminar on state governance and administration, dialogue among political parties, sports meeting, film festival and cultural festival this year, so as to promote the BRICS cooperation to get the public more involved and take deep root in people's heart, and constantly consolidate the public opinion foundation for the BRICS cooperation.

--We should also constantly expand the circle of friends with the "BRICS Plus" as the support. This year, the summit will be held on the African continent again. South Africa combines the focus on Africa with the "BRICS Plus", which is conducive to further enriching the "BRICS Plus" cooperation, and better supporting the development of the African continent. China will hold the Beijing Summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation this September. It is hoped that the two summits will form interconnected effects in succession to promote the peace and prosperity in vast African countries.

Wang Yi expressed that we believe that under the joint efforts of various parties, the BRICS Summit in Johannesburg will surely achieve fruitful outcomes and realize a good start for the second "golden decade".
