Director of the Office of the Central Commission for Foreign Affairs Yang Jiechi Holds Consultations with ROK Director of the National Security Office Suh Hoon

On 22 August local time, Yang Jiechi, Member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and Director of the Office of the Central Commission for Foreign Affairs, held consultations with Suh Hoon, Director of the National Security Office of the Republic of Korea (ROK) in Busan.

Yang spoke positively of the progress in China’s relations with the ROK and the sound growth momentum the relations have enjoyed under President Xi Jinping and President Moon Jae-in’s strategic guidance. He highlighted the two countries’ close cooperation to combat COVID-19 and exemplary role by bringing domestic outbreaks under control and making solid progress in bilateral cooperation on various fronts.

Yang expressed China’s readiness to work with the ROK to increase bilateral high-level exchanges and strategic communication, synergize development strategies, explore and cultivate new areas of cooperation, and boost economic, trade and people-to-people ties, with a view to taking the strategic cooperative partnership to a new level.

Yang reiterated China’s commitment to a new type of international relations featuring mutual respect, fairness and justice and win-win cooperation. He said China will enhance cooperation with the ROK in the multilateral arena and on upholding multilateralism and free trade. China supports the ROK in advancing regional economic integration as the current chair of the China-Japan-ROK cooperation mechanism.

Yang expressed China’s support for improvement and development of inter-Korean relations and for reconciliation and cooperation on the Peninsula. China will work with all other parties concerned to play a constructive role in bringing about a political settlement of the issues on the Peninsula.

Suh said that the ROK places great importance on its relations with China. He hailed China’s success in containing COVID-19 and restoring social and economic normalcy as a remarkable achievement of the Chinese people under the extraordinary leadership of President Xi Jinping. The ROK side looks forward to closer high-level exchanges with China and deeper dialogue and cooperation in a whole range of areas. It will work with China to build lasting peace on the Korean Peninsula, actively advance the ROK-China-Japan cooperation agenda, uphold multilateralism in international affairs and make new contributions to the global COVID-19 response.

The two sides also exchanged views on the developments in the Asia-Pacific region. The Chinese side shared its principled position on China-US relations.
