A Brief Introduction to Chinese Visas

The Chinese visa authorities may issue a Diplomatic, Courtesy, Service or Ordinary visas to a foreigner based on one's identity, purpose of visit to China and type of passport.

 

The Ordinary visa includes 8 sub-categories, which are respectively marked with Chinese phonetic letters such as L, F, X, Z, G,C,J and D.

 

L Visa:- Issued to an applicant who comes to China for tourist purpose, family visiting or other personal affairs.

 

F Visa:- Issued to an applicant who is invited to China for conference, research, lecture, business, scientific-technological and cultural exchanges or short-term studies or intern practice for a period of no more than six months.

 

X Visa:-Issued to an applicant who intends to study or practise internship in China for more than six months.

 

Z Visa:- Issued to an applicant (and one's accompanying family members) who intends to take up a post or employment in China, and to conduct commercial performance in China for any period of time.

 

G Visa:- Issued to an applicant who intends to transit to a third country via China.

 

C Visa:- Issued to an applicant who are crewmembers on international aviation, navigation and land transportation missions and family members accompanying them.

 

J Visa:- Issued to foreign journalists. It has two types, namely J-1 and J-2 visas. J-1 visa is issued to a foreign resident correspondent in China. J-2 Visa is issued to a foreign resident correspondent on temporary short term journalistic report mission in China.

 

D Visa:- Issued to an applicant who has been approved to reside permanently in China.
