Chinese Consulate General in Kolkata Holds 70th National Day Reception

On 29 Sept., the Consulate General of the People’s Republic of China held a grand reception to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China in West Bengal.

B. Salim, Visva Bharati Vice Chancellor Prof. Bidyut Chakarabarty, Biju Janata Dal General Secretary and Spokesman Mr Priyadarshi Mishra, Sports Authority of India East & Northeast Director Mr Manmeet Singh Goindi, Haryana Agriculture & Rural Development Minister Advisor Mr Abhinav Balyan, Jharkhand State Skills & Livelihood Program Manager Mr Hasnain Warshi, West Bengal Women Affairs Commission Member Prof. Maria Fernandes, together with representatives from business, universities and schools, thinktanks, consular corps, media, Chinese community, Chinese companies etc., amounting to over 600 people, were present.

Before the reception, the International Photo Exhibition Celebrating the 70th Founding Anniversary of the People’s Republic of China was inaugurated by Consul General Mr Zha Liyou and West Bengal Under Secretary Mr Manish Mishra, and other distinguished guests. Mr Zha also accompanied West Bengal Additional Chief Secretary Mr Alapan Bandyopadhyay, Prof. Bidyut Chakarabarty, and others in watching the photos,which showcase the joint endeavors and great achievements the Chinese people have made to create a prosperous life, and the arduous exploration, successful experience and worldwide significance of socialism with Chinese characteristics.

The reception started by playing national anthems of India and China. Mr Zha Liyou then delivered the key note speech and introduced the huge achievements made by China over the past 70 years. He said the Chinese nation has achieved a tremendous transformation from standing up, to growing rich and becoming strong, and socialism with Chinese characteristics has entered a new era. This is the result of leadership of the Communist Party of China and joint efforts of all Chinese people with strong faith in our path, guiding theories, political system, and culture, demonstrating the superiority and vitality of the socialism with Chinese characteristics. Chinese people under the leadership of the Communist Party of China are doing our best to secure a decisive victory in building a moderately prosperous society in all respects, and realize the Chinese Dream of national rejuvenation.

Mr Zha pointed out that China-India relations maintain a good momentum of rapid development. President Xi Jinping and Prime Minister Modi has met six times since last year. Two meetings of China-India High-level Mechanism on Cultural and People-to-People Exchanges were successfully held, and so was the sixth Sino-India Strategic Economic Dialogue. And we are celebrating the 70th anniversary of establishing our diplomatic relations soon. China will uphold the concept of amity, sincerity, mutual benefit, and inclusiveness put forward by President Xi Jinping and the neighborhood diplomacy policy of building friendship and partnership with neighboring countries, and work with India to continue to promote a closer development partnership.

The Consul General also introduced the important functions held by the consulate this year, and thanked friends from all walks of life in East India for their support of the consulate. He said that his office would work together with friends from all walks of life to further promote pragmatic cooperation in various fields between China and East India, and inject new impetus to development of Sino-Indian relations. He also made clarifications on Sino-US trade frictions and the situation in Hong Kong.

Mr Alapan Bandyopadhyay as Chief Guest gave a speech and congratulated on the 70th Chinese National Day, highly appreciated the work done by the Chinese Consulate General, and expected to the joint efforts of both sides to deepen the friendly sub-national relations between West Bengal and China.

The audience gave warm applause to the Consul General’s speech, and praised the tremendous development achievements China has made in the past 70 years. They expressed their willingness to continue to work with the consulate to enhance India-China friendship and pragmatic cooperation.

Cross-cultural programs were put on, including traditional Chinese lion dance show, Odissi dance by a young Chinese lady called Wu Kan, and a famous Chinese song called Jasmine sang by an Bengali family. Videos on Chinese development achievements were played, and books on China and Sino-India friendship were available.


The reception continued for nearly four hours, with marvelous decorations and lighting, beautiful flowers and smiles, lovely songs and music, and delicious Chinese foods. Mr and Mrs Zha Liyou received gifts from their friends and talked and took photos with them.

Over 30 mainstream English, Hindi and Bengali media, including PTI, Times of India, The Telegraph, The Statesman, Millennium Post, Ananda Bazar Patrika, ANI TV and Kolkata TV were present to cover the event.
