Assistant Foreign Minister Wu Hongbo Meets with Myanmar Delegation of Consular Affairs Consultation and Consular Treaty Negotiation

On May 25, 2009, Assistant Foreign Minister Wu Hongbo met with U Min Lwin and U Maung Wai, the Director General and the Deputy Director General of the Consular & Legal Affairs Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Myanmar attending the sixth round of bilateral consultations on consular affairs and the second round of negotiations on consular treaty between China and Myanmar in Beijing. Wu said that China and Myanmar are neighbors linked by mountains and waters. The people of the two countries enjoy a long history of exchanges and profound friendship. Over the past half century since China and Myanmar established diplomatic ties, the bilateral relations have developed steadily and exchanges in various fields expanded constantly. The two countries support each other in international affairs and have played an active role of maintaining their core national interest respectively. The sixth round of bilateral consultations on consular affairs and the second round of negotiation on consular treaty held in Beijing are beneficial to increasing the mutual trust and understanding and solving problems of maintaining the legitimate right and interest of the citizens and legal persons of the two countries and facilitating bilateral personnel exchanges. It is hoped that this round of consultation can achieve positive results in order to further deepen the consular relations between China and Myanmar.

U Min Lwin expressed gratitude to Wu for arranging the meeting, agreement on the positive remarks made by the Chinese side on the bilateral relations and willingness of making joint efforts with China to strengthen exchanges and cooperation in consular affairs and promote the development of the bilateral consular relations.
