Assistant Foreign Minister Wu Hongbo Meets with Lao Delegation to Consular Consultations

On June 9, 2009, Chinese Assistant Foreign Minister Wu Hongbo met with a delegation headed by Director General of the Consular Department of the Lao Ministry of Foreign Affairs Mr. Khamla,who are here for the fifth round of bilateral consular consultations. Director General Wei Wei of the Department of Consular Affairs of the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs attended the consultation meeting. Wu said China and Laos are friendly neighbors and the friendship between the two peoples goes back to ancient times. The two sides have maintained mutual political trust and sincere economic cooperation and worked closely in international and regional affairs with deepening exchanges in all areas. Premier Wen Jiabao at invitation paid a working visit to the Laos in March, 2008. In August, Lao President Choummaly attended the opening ceremony of the Beijing Olympic Games. In particular, in the wake of the devastating earthquakes that struck Wenchuan, Sichuan Province in last May, the Lao side sent messages of condolence and offered assistance to the Chinese people in a timely manner, which China appreciated. The holding of bilateral consular consultations is conducive to building mutual understanding and trust and addressing concerns of maintaining the legitimate right and interest of the citizens and legal persons of the two countries and facilitating bilateral personnel exchanges. It is also of positive significance to developing bilateral friendly relations, he added. It is hoped that this round of consultation can achieve positive results, said Wu. Khamla expressed gratitude to Wu for taking time off his busy schedule to meet with him, agreement on the positive remarks made by the Chinese side on the bilateral relations and willingness of making joint efforts with China to strengthen exchanges and cooperation in consular affairs and promote the development of bilateral friendly relations.
