Xi Jinping Speaks with Montenegrin President Milo Djukanovic on the Phone

On May 26, 2021, President Xi Jinping had a phone conversation with Montenegrin President Milo Djukanovic.

Xi Jinping pointed out that since the establishment of diplomatic ties between China and Montenegro, the two countries have always maintained high-level political mutual trust, and supported each other on issues involving their respective core interests and major concerns. Driven by such mechanisms as Belt and Road cooperation as well as cooperation between China and Central and Eastern European Countries (CEECs), China and Montenegro have achieved outstanding cooperation results in such key areas as transportation infrastructure construction and energy. Since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, the two countries have been supporting each other, and carrying out sound cooperation in such fields as pandemic prevention and control as well as production resumption. China is willing to continue to provide as much assistance as its capacity allows for Montenegro's fight against the pandemic, and promote the building of a global community of health for all.

Xi Jinping stressed that the world is facing changes unseen in a century and a once-in-a-century pandemic. China is willing to work with Montenegro to carry forward the friendship, consolidate political mutual trust, and continuously deepen practical cooperation with Montenegro in various fields such as infrastructure construction, so as to promote the continuous development of bilateral relations, and better benefit the people of the two countries. The two sides should maintain close coordination on multilateral affairs, jointly safeguard international equity and justice, and commit themselves to building a community with a shared future for mankind.

Xi Jinping emphasized that during the recent China-CEEC Summit, I reached broad consensus with President Djukanovic and other participating leaders, and we made important plans for the development of the cooperation mechanism. This year is the China-CEEC Year of Green Development and Environmental Protection. China supports Montenegro in playing a positive role as the leading country of the China-CEEC environmental protection cooperation mechanism. China stands ready to work with Montenegro to implement the consensus and achievements of the Summit and continuously consolidate and develop China-CEEC cooperation.

Djukanovic expressed warm congratulations on the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Communist Party of China (CPC). Noting that under Xi's strong leadership, China has made great achievements in development, he said he believes that under the leadership of the CPC, China will surely attain new and greater achievements. Montenegro and China enjoy a profound friendship and are true, sincere and good friends. Montenegro appreciates China's consistent adherence to the principle of equality between big and small countries, and its respect for the independent choices of development paths that different countries have made in line with their respective national conditions. Montenegro is also grateful for China's valuable support for Montenegro's economic and social development and its fight against the COVID-19 pandemic. The Belt and Road cooperation and the CEEC-China cooperation mechanism have brought important opportunities and tangible benefits to Montenegro and other countries in the region. Montenegro stands ready to work with China to continuously push forward cooperation in such areas as infrastructure, economy, trade, education, culture and tourism, and welcomes more corporate investments and cooperation from China. Montenegro will continue to actively participate in and firmly push for greater development of CEEC-China cooperation, and resolutely safeguard multilateralism. I have full confidence that Montenegro-China and CEEC-China cooperation will embrace more vigorous development in the future.
