Wang Yi: China-Uzbekistan Comprehensive Strategic Partnership is Believed to Achieve New Progress

On November 12, 2016 local time, after holding talks in Tashkent, Foreign Minister Wang Yi and Foreign Minister Abdulaziz Kamilov of Uzbekistan jointly met the press.

Wang Yi said that this is my third visit to Tashkent within this year, which fully demonstrates the closeness of bilateral exchanges and the high level of bilateral relations. During this visit, I first went to Samarkand to pay tribute to President Islam Karimov. President Islam Karimov was the founding President and an outstanding leader of Uzbekistan, who dedicated his life to the Uzbek people. As an old friend and good friend of the Chinese people, he also made historic contributions to the development of China-Uzbekistan relations. The Chinese people will cherish the memory of him forever.

Just now, Foreign Minister Abdulaziz Kamilov and I had an in-depth discussion concerning the development plan of China-Uzbekistan relations in the new period, reaching extensive consensus: we both agree that the top priority at present is to jointly well implement the results yielded from President Xi Jinping's historic visit to Uzbekistan this June, especially to add new connotations to, tap new fields for and inject new impetus into the comprehensive strategic partnership officially established by the two countries.

We both agree to continue to set the joint construction of the "Silk Road Economic Belt" as the main course of China-Uzbekistan cooperation. We will accelerate cooperation in such aspects as infrastructure construction and industrial park construction. China is willing to continue to import competitive commodities from Uzbekistan, support Uzbekistan's infrastructure construction, encourage Chinese enterprises to invest in Uzbekistan and provide necessary financing support for major cooperation projects through such channels as Chinese financing institutions, the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank and the Silk Road Fund. In accordance with Uzbekistan's needs, China will offer high-quality, advanced and environmental friendly production capacity and equipment so as to assist Uzbekistan to speed up its industrial modernization.

We also agree to strengthen bilateral and multilateral communication and coordination, deepen cooperation in law enforcement, security and intelligence, sternly combat the "three evil forces" together, and enhance cooperation within multilateral frameworks, including the UN and Shanghai Cooperation Organization, so as to safeguard peace, stability and security in the region and the world.

Wang Yi expressed that this year marks the 25th anniversary of the independence of Uzbekistan. Over the past 25 years, under the leadership of President Islam Karimov, the Uzbek people have made great achievements in consolidating national independence and development. Since Acting President Shavkat Mirziyoyev took office, he and President Xi Jinping have exchanged several letters. Leaders of both countries agree to maintain high-level contacts, strengthen mutual support, and work together to push China-Uzbekistan relations for smooth transition and new development. We are glad to see that under the leadership of Acting President Shavkat Mirziyoyev, Uzbekistan has maintained unity, social harmony and stability and sustained economic growth internally as well as more active external relations. Next month, Uzbekistan will hold a presidential election. China believes that this election will definitely be a success. Uzbekistan will certainly achieve new development and prosperity, and China-Uzbekistan comprehensive strategic partnership will certainly make new progress. As the comprehensive strategic partner of Uzbekistan, China will support Uzbekistan as usual in following a development path suitable to its own national conditions, back its efforts in safeguarding sovereignty independence as well as legitimate rights and interests, and support the country to play a more active role in international and regional stages.
