The Ministry of Foreign Affairs Lodges Stern Representations Against Canada's Participation in the Erroneous Taiwan-related Statement by G7

On August 4, 2022, Vice Foreign Minister Xie Feng summoned Chargé d'affaires a.i. of the Canadian Embassy in China Jim Nickel for a meeting, and lodged stern representations against the erroneous Taiwan-related statement by G7 foreign ministers and the High Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy.

Xie Feng said that China strongly condemns the G7 statement, which confounds black and white and helps the villain do evil. Pelosi's visit to Taiwan is a serious violation of the one-China principle and the provisions of the three China-U.S. joint communiqués. It has a severe impact on the political foundation of China-U.S. relations, seriously infringes on China's sovereignty and territorial integrity, and gravely undermines peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait. The U.S. side has kept challenging China's bottom line and undermining China's core interests, leading to constant escalation of tension. The current situation is entirely caused by the U.S. side. The U.S. must bear full responsibility. It was the U.S. side who played with the fire and made the provocations first, and China has been compelled to act in self-defense. China's move is legitimate, justified and lawful. Instead of holding the U.S. to account, the G7 has called on China to remain calm and exercise restraint. This is blatant gangster logic. The world today is not the time when the Eight-Power Allied Forces ran riot. For centuries the Western aggressors could occupy another country simply by setting up a few cannons on a coast in the East. But gone forever are those days. Whoever damages China's national interests must pay the price!

Xie Feng pointed out that the G7 statement is like a thief crying "Stop thief!". It blatantly tramples underfoot the basic norms governing international relations. While keeping talking about being committed to "maintaining the rules-based international order", the G7 has wantonly violated the international law and basic norms governing international relations that have the respect for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of all countries at their core, and has breached the one-China principle that has been affirmed by the UN General Assembly Resolution 2758, unequivocally committed to by 181 countries in the world, and universally observed by the international community. Pelosi is a saboteur of peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait, a saboteur of China's sovereignty, security and territorial integrity, and a saboteur of international peace, stability and development. What Pelosi has done is not only a provocation to the Chinese people, but also a challenge to peace-loving forces in the international community. The G7 countries know these full well. Why do they lie through their teeth and shift blame?

Xie Feng stressed that Taiwan is China's Taiwan, and Taiwan will eventually return to the embrace of the motherland. China's resolve to uphold national sovereignty and territorial integrity is unswerving. So is China's resolve to oppose external interference in China's internal affairs. Any conspiracy to condone and support the separatist forces for "Taiwan independence" is doomed to failure. More than 100 countries and international organizations, including the United Nations, have reiterated their support for the one-China principle. The G7, in no way, represents the international community. The G7 countries should clearly recognize the overall trend and not stand against the 1.4 billion Chinese people, against the majority of countries in the world and against international justice. China urges the Canadian side to immediately correct its mistakes, respect facts, distinguish right from wrong, stop following and participating in bloc confrontation, and stop taking wrong moves on Taiwan-related issues. Otherwise, all consequences shall be borne by the Canadian side.
