2022-08-19 22:20

On August 19, 2022, State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi had a phone conversation with French President's Diplomatic Advisor Emmanuel Bonne.

Wang Yi noted that despite the current circumstances, China-France relations have continued to make steady and fresh progress, showing great exemplary significance. China and France are both major countries with a long-standing tradition of independence. The more complex the international situation becomes, the more important it is for the two sides to shoulder the international responsibility of safeguarding world peace and promoting common development. It is important that the two sides accommodate each other's core interests and actively strengthen cooperation in aviation and aerospace, civil nuclear energy, agriculture and other fields in the spirit of mutual respect. The two sides need to map out, through the high-level people-to-people and cultural exchanges mechanism, good plans for people-to-people and cultural exchanges and cooperation in the run-up to the 60th anniversary of China-France diplomatic relations and the Paris Olympic Games, both in 2024, and bring into full play the due role of the two important cultures. It is also important to uphold true multilateralism, continuously strengthen cooperation in such fields as global security and development, and promote the dynamic development of China-France comprehensive strategic partnership.

Wang Yi expounded on China's stern position on the Taiwan question, appreciated France’s commitment to the one-China policy, and stressed that the United States and the "Taiwan independence" forces have repeatedly carried out acts to change the status quo across the Taiwan Strait and hollow out the one-China principle, seriously jeopardizing peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait. When it comes to the principled issue of national sovereignty and territorial integrity, there is no room for any country to back down. It is only natural for China to take actions to defend its legitimate rights and prevent further crises.

Bonne said France shares the view that the basic norms governing international relations should be upheld, and regional security, peace and stability safeguarded. Like China, France rejects the Cold War mentality and opposes bloc confrontation. France hopes to join hands with China to address the current international and regional crises and send a positive message of solidarity to the world. France attaches great importance to developing the comprehensive strategic partnership with China and stands ready to work with China to build a dynamic, constructive and strong bilateral relationship. He stressed that the two sides should step up high-level dialogue and exchanges, deepen practical cooperation in fields like economy and trade, science and technology, and people-to-people and cultural exchanges, and jointly address climate change, food security and other global challenges.

Bonne said France always adheres to the one-China policy and respects China's sovereignty and territorial integrity, which is a position that remains unchanged. France hopes to see continued effort to maintain stability across the Taiwan Strait through dialogue and consultation.
