On March 29, 2024, Special Envoy Zhai Jun of the Chinese Government on the Middle East Issue met with EU Special Representative for the Middle East Peace Process Sven Koopmans. The two sides mainly had an exchange of views on the conflict in Gaza.

Zhai Jun said, the conflict in Gaza has been protracted for nearly half a year, and the humanitarian situation is grave and the spillover effect continues to emerge. The Chinese side urges the parties concerned to earnestly implement the UN Security Council resolutions as well as end hostilities and achieve a ceasefire immediately, which is the prerequisite for resolving all issues. The Chinese side also calls for the speedy, safe, accessible and sustainable delivery of humanitarian supplies to the people of Gaza. He stressed that a political settlement based on the "two-state solution" is the only way out for the Palestinian question. Noting that both China and the EU are important forces for world peace and stability, Zhai Jun said, the two sides should work together to cool down the situation in Gaza, ease the humanitarian crisis and make unremitting efforts for a comprehensive, just and lasting settlement of the Palestinian question at an early date.

Sven Koopmans said, the continuation of the conflict in Gaza is in no one's interest. The imperatives are to end hostilities and prevent the conflict from turning into a regional war. The UN Security Council resolution on ceasefire in Gaza is binding and must be effectively implemented. The EU appreciates China's important role in easing the situation and promoting peace talks, and is willing to strengthen coordination and cooperation with China to promote ceasefire and cessation of hostilities, ensure humanitarian assistance, prevent the spillover of conflicts and advance the Middle East peace process.
