Wang Yi: Build Open Circles of Friends with an Inclusive Mind

2023-09-02 23:00

On September 2, 2023, Member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and Foreign Minister Wang Yi delivered remarks upon invitation at the Global Town Hall via video link.

Wang Yi said that President Xi Jinping has made the point time and again that openness is the lifeline of Asia-Pacific cooperation, and we should uphold open regionalism. This is a valuable lesson that has enabled Asia to become the world's most vibrant and promising region. It is also a natural choice for Asia to sustain its prosperity in the future.

"As a powerhouse of global economic recovery and growth, people look to Asia to advance a new round of globalization. We need to seize the opportunity, follow the trend of the times, lead regional economic integration in the spirit of openness, make full use of the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP), reject decoupling, severing supply chains, or creating a small yard with high fences, and work for more smooth and integrated regional economic circulation in the region. We need to build open, non-exclusive circles of friends with an inclusive mind, respect ASEAN centrality and ASEAN-led regional cooperation architecture, abandon the Cold War mentality, oppose zero-sum game, and keep our region away from geopolitical calculations or becoming a pawn in great-power rivalry."
